Click here Welcome to the March 2024 NewsletterSpring Budget: Where next for economic growth, underpinned by net zero?Earlier this month, Nigel Wilcock, Executive Director of the Institute of Economic Development, wrote a blog looking at the Chancellor's Budget, our Grow Local, Grow National manifesto, and net zero. Policy UpdateAt the start of this year we wrote to political leaders, APPGs, Select Committees, and other sector leaders/wider influencers about our Grow Local, Grow National manifesto with a request to meet to discuss our recommendations. In recent weeks, our Chair Tom Stannard has met with Jacob Young MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Levelling Up), Baroness (Sharon) Taylor, Shadow Spokesperson for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, and is scheduled to meet the APPG on Regeneration and Levelling Up, Local Government Association and District Councils’ Network. We have also received correspondence from the Private Secretary to The Rt Hon Angela Rayner MP, Deputy Leader, Shadow Deputy Prime Minister and Shadow Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, to confirm our letter has been passed on to colleagues for future policy engagement; as well as Gareth Davies MP, Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, and the Economic Affairs Committee. Our manifesto has been profiled in Local Government Chronicle, The MJ, Local Gov, Placemaking Resource, Room 151 and Public Finance, with further media engagement and events planned, including a Growing local economies: strategies for sustainable growth online event hosted by Social Value Engine on Tuesday 14th May (10-11am). Growing Local Economies: the role of social impact and economic development in place and community wealth-buildingWe are delighted to be supporting our friends and IED members, at the Social Value Engine in a webinar they are hosting on 14 May 10-11am. The Social Value Engine, the only UK accredited software tool for assessing social value jointly owned and developed by East Riding of Yorkshire Council and Rose Regeneration, has a strong conviction about the merits of localisation in community wealth-building. Inspired by the Institute of Economic Development’s timely Grow Local, Grow National manifesto, Social Value Engine is hosting a free webinar exploring the importance of social impact on localities and place at the very heart of economic development in driving change. The session will provide a UK-wide perspective and draw on voices across the devolved nations. To book onto this webinar, being held online on 14 May 10-11am, please click on the link below.
