South Africa will mark the 29th anniversary of its first democratic elections tomorrow. It will do so as the prospect looms larger that the African National Congress (ANC), the party that’s governed the country since 1994, may have to enter a coalition after the 2024 national and provincial elections. Its likely partner is the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). Dirk Kotze analyses whether this could work - because they have very different ideas on how to run
the country.
Sudan has experienced more coups, attempted coups and coup plots than any other African country. Its former president, Omar al-Bashir, came to power in 1989 through a military coup. He was deposed in similar fashion in 2019 after a popular uprising. However, during his three decades in power, Bashir established a brutal government system that gave him and his allies control over almost every part of public life in the country. Willow Berridge explains how
this system is undermining efforts to bring about a democratic transition in Sudan.
