Are you one of the lucky ones who manage to escape the cold each year or are you like the majority of us who hunker down for the traditionally
freezing month of July? At my place in Earnscleugh I had minus 12 last week but I’m sure the people in the Maniototo will be saying 'harden up', much like the ice on the dams. We went skating on the Manorburn Dam on Sunday which was superb fun and we’ll keep our fingers crossed that a big Bonspiel may be called. Photographers should take the opportunity to shoot this strange but captivating sport where hardy southern folk embrace their Scottish heritage. They converge from far and wide for a day on the ice - drinking steaming hot toddies and playing ‘the roaring game’ of curling.
There are plenty of
reasons to get out and about in winter and the more you do the easier the season is to handle. Spirits rise, cheeks glow, fires beckon and music resonates. Practising your art is a fantastic activity for this time of year and a therapeutic way to spend cold weekends. The Arts Gold Awards
are still calling for entries so hopefully some winter solace will give artists the creative spirit, the time and breathing space, to develop an exceptional artwork to enter before the 14th September.
Again, there are opportunities all around the region to develop your talents, 'Your Chance to Dance' winter workshops are being held in the July school holidays and talented tutors are coming from around New Zealand to teach dance. All ages are welcome to register so check below for more details. The New Zealand Mountain Film Festival is on from the 3rd until the 11th July and there is a fantastic program associated with this
annual event, along with great workshops and competitions. The Hullabaloo winter group exhibition "Sense of Place" opens on July 11 in Old Cromwell and will be well worth a look. In the listings below you can find out more information.
Keep cosy folks!
