What's On in the Arts in Central Otago - February.

January was a busy month for the Central Otago District Arts Trust as we celebrated the completion of the Teviot Valley Intercultural Public Art Project. The Arts Trust, in collaboration with the Teviot Valley Community Development Group, engaged internationally renowned artists Flox and TrustMe to implement the project which included art workshops and the subsequent design and completion of a public art piece. A series of workshops were held in Roxburgh and Millers Flat where attendees had the opportunity to learn the practical skills of street art whilst being encouraged to verbally and visually represent their culture and what the Teviot means
to them. Ideas gathered from these community workshops alongside the artist’s own research of the Valley informed the final design of the public art piece. Multiple images were integrated, each referencing various aspects of the rich history and heritage of the Valley. The final product is a beautiful artwork measuring approx 12m x 9m, highly visible on the main street of Roxburgh. Feedback from this project has been phenomenal and as a result, the Arts Trust may explore the possibility of facilitating similar projects in the coming years. An exhibition of around 50 textile artworks from the Reddy Arts Textile Group (RATG), Brisbane
and Central Otago Outside the Square (COOTS), opened on Friday at Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery in Alexandra. This show, titled '17 Degrees Diversity of Difference' celebrates a collaborative project between both art groups and explores the 17 degrees latitudinal distance between them, and all the similarities and differences that separation has created. Works on show include wall hangings of painted and stitched fabric, hand-dyed silk scarves, stitched and machine-pieced quilts, felted paintings and book covers created in richly hued fabrics. In addition, items from the Central Stories Museum collection created by Pat Hewitt (a founding member of COOTS) are on display in
the Heaphy Gallery for the duration of the event. If you have the urge to get creative take a look at the great line up of art workshops happening in the Heritage Precinct, Cromwell in March. New Art in Old Cromwell returns with a series of workshops including jewellery, weaving, eco printing onto fabric, beginners metalwork, ceramics, painting and freestyle texture weaving. Finally, a massive congratulations to Central Otago local Jackson Collier of the Alexandra Musical Society who was awarded the iTICKET Up and Coming Talent Scholarship at the Otago Southland Theatre Awards at the beginning of the month.
