Central Otago District Arts Trust

Hello

What's On in the Arts in Central Otago - May

The closing date for entries into the WoolOn Creative Fashion Awards 2023 is looming and organisers are excited to report they have already received a healthy number of submissions. If you are considering entering but have questions, or you feel like you are running out of time, please feel free to get in touch with Designer Liaison Jamie Richards by emailing [email protected]

WoolOn has evolved from simple beginnings to become one of Central Otago’s most anticipated events, attracting entries from New Zealand and overseas. WoolOn invites both new and experienced designers to create visual, wearable pieces, using New Zealand's most sustainable wool fibres. Over time the wool fibre definition has broadened. Now pieces made from alpaca, cashmere, angora goat and mohair, along with the traditional sheep are welcomed.

This year, with the current economic situation, and the time and expense of creating these magnificent pieces in mind, organisers have decided that any entry that has been shown in another competition prior to entering WoolOn is eligible for entry - provided it has not won the same category entered, or overall.

Other changes include an update to the categories and awards sections. Categories now include Streetwear, Avant-Garde, Special Occasion, Collections, Felted, Toi Tu ki Uruuruwhenua, Hand-Crafted, Accessories, Knitwear and Sustainable Wool and awards include the addition of a People’s Choice, U23 Emerging Designer, School Designer and more.

The 2023 Awards will happen over a three-day period with an opening celebration on the 11th of August at The Canyon, Tarras. This will be a gala-style full show for students and first-time entrants. The People’s Choice award will be presented along with the U23 Emerging Designer, School Designer and Novice awards.

The main event, the WoolOn Gala Awards, will be held on Saturday 12th August also at The Canyon. This evening will include awards for Technique, Menswear, People’s Choice and the supreme winner.

The Intimate Experience WoolOn Up Close will be held on Sunday 13th August at Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery. Throughout the day attendees will be able to participate in workshops, shop stalls, view the winning garments and more.

Tickets will be available from mid-June.

Visit www.woolon.co.nz or like the Facebook Page WoolOn Creative Fashion Event for more information and to keep up to date.

May is a busy time in the arts in Central Otago with plenty of workshops, exhibitions and events happening in the area throughout the month. If you live in Cromwell, or are just passing through, make sure you take a look at the Cromwell Football Club rooms on the Alpha Street Reserve where an exciting mural project will begin to come to life in the coming weeks!
