First projects underway and making good progress

Memorial Avenue/Greers Road

The work on Memorial Avenue was completed earlier this month and is now focused on Greers Road and the streets running off it: Cottesmore Close, Guildford Street and Sealy Place.

The temporary one-way system will continue to operate on Greers Road until mid-March. From mid-March until the end of July, there will be a one-way system in place from Guildford Street up to Wairakei Road.

Detours are being adjusted during the phasing of the works and will be clearly sign-posted. Bus stop changes are also in place – the MetroInfo website has details: www.metroinfo.co.nz/timetables/updates/

The work is expected to finish at the end of July 2026.

Morrison Avenue/Langdons Road

Work on Langdons Road is now complete, with the rest of the work to be carried out in Morrison Avenue north of the intersection with Langdons Road.

Following feedback from local businesses about the impact of the works, the contractor has adapted their methodology to have smaller active work areas at any given time.

On Morrison Avenue, work will be carried out in sections to reduce disruption to the wider area. Traffic management is in place and will move as the works progress. The narrowness of the street in some sections makes traffic management challenging, so some sections will require temporary road closures while the work is underway. Where the road is wide enough, a one-way system will operate (Sawyers Arms to Langdons Road).

Condell Avenue wastewater and street renewals

We’re replacing a section of wastewater main and lateral pipes on Condell Avenue – between Aorangi Road and Matsons Avenue – starting in early March.

A one-way system will be implemented on Condell Avenue between Aorangi Road and Matsons Avenue. Reduced speed limits will be in place during construction works and sections of the road will be closed to through traffic at times. This work has been scheduled ahead of the wastewater pipe replacement work on Wairakei Road to help maintain traffic flows through the area during both projects. The start works notice has more details.

Start works notice - Condell Avenue

The planned street renewal of Condell Avenue is in the scheme design phase, with construction of this project between Matsons Avenue and Blighs Road to be programmed in 2027, subject to consultation and approval. As we’re doing with the wastewater work, we are coordinating the Condell Avenue street renewal with other projects in the wider Northwest programme of works to help with traffic flow and reduce the disruption of the work.

In the meantime, contractors have been working in Condell Avenue this month carrying out road maintenance work – repairing cracks, potholes and other road damage in parts of the carriageway, as well as repairing sunken lateral trenches north of Matsons Avenue toward Greers Road. Resurfacing of the road from Flower Street to Matsons Avenue will follow in April (likely to take just one day). This maintenance work does not involve the section of road where we’ll be replacing wastewater pipes.

Signal upgrades on Wairakei Road

We’re upgrading traffic signals at several intersections along Strowan and Wairakei Roads, from Glandovey Road, Heaton Street and Rossall Street in the south, through to the intersection of Wairakei Road and Grahams Road in the northwest.

While we’re replacing traffic signal infrastructure at Idris Road/Wairakei Road and at the railway crossing, we’re also making improvements to the traffic signals to better facilitate traffic flows ahead of the upcoming wastewater pipe replacement work on Wairakei Road.

These improvements include:

  • a right turn phase from Wairakei Road into Idris Road (north)
  • a right turn phase from Grahams Road into Wairakei Road
  • changes to the layout at the Wairakei Road railway crossing to increase the amount of waiting space for people using the Puari ki Pū-harakeke-nui Northern Line cycleway.

Work to replace the signal infrastructure is being staged, starting with Idris Road/Wairakei Road and then the railway crossing. It is also being coordinated with the resurfacing of the road.
