Youth Arts Central Otago What's On – April & May 2026

Kia ora koutou and amazing job for making it through an epicly busy term. We hope you enjoy Autumn’s chilly mornings in a cosy spot, a spirited easter egg hunt, and all the arts events and competitions on offer during April and May. We’ve added some links below that will keep you inspired over the break and into May. Please remember to expand the bottom of the email to view the whole range of events. Happy holidays! Do: For curious minds The Kids Should See This is a Webby award-winning video collection for curious minds of all
ages. It’s curated for teachers and families that explores extraordinary educational storytelling by museums, universities, experts, innovators, artists, and enthusiasts. It’s broken up into themes such as DIY (Do It Yourself), music, art and animation, and is filled to the brim with wonderful work, ideas, and challenges. Watch: The science behind
art MetKids Microscope is a series of short films about the science behind the art (and the art behind the science!) at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Learn true stories about real discoveries from scientists at the Museum, and do some experiments on your own! Marvel: Artistry at its most impressive If you love dinosaurs, then you’ll love learning about The Dakotaraptor Project, which brings to life one of North America’s largest predators in glass. Every bone is meticulously crafted by sculptors Grant and Erin Garmezy to capture the strength, motion, and presence of a creature that once ruled its world. Draw: Bug art Preorders are now being taken for How to Draw Bugs for Kids, a book created by professional artist and author Alli Koch. The book inspires creativity and
confidence with fun step-by-step drawing lessons made just for kids! From ladybugs to spiders to butterflies and more, this beginner-friendly “how to draw” book makes learning to draw a butterfly or a ladybug simple and exciting. Learn: Beginners art class The Design Journey Art Class is a free online course for beginners who want to learn basic drawing techniques. The course begins by covering the foundations of each topic, and covers hand lettering, watercolour, and drawing animals, with more to be released soon. Relax: Celebrating Autumn Enjoy creating some simple but dynamic art using only black paper, chalk pastels, tape and the unique shapes of the leaves before they fall. Ngā mihi,
Isabel Beardmore (Central Otago Arts)
