    The Societies & Cultures Institute (SCI) invites you to join The Reverend Professor Keith Magee as he discusses the 2024 US elections and the impact of race and religion on our politics. Keith will also be talking about his latest book, Prophetic Justice: Race, Religion & Politics, which will be followed by a book signing.

    Keith Magee is a public intellectual, theologian, and social justice scholar. He is Senior Fellow and Visiting Professor of Practice in Cultural Justice at University College London (UCL) Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose.

    Digital Humanities- Discussion Groups and Mixer Event

    The Digital Humanities team are pleased to invite you to two fortnightly discussion groups and our first Digital HASS Mixer.

    The Humanities and AI Forum is a fortnightly opportunity to discuss the latest ideas and developments in anything related to the intersection of these fields.

    The Humanities Space and Place Forum is your fortnightly chance to share ideas and practice on the intersection between Geography and the Humanities. While we have a regular interest in the application of technologies in this space, recommendations for any related topic are welcome.

    The discussion groups will be held online on alternate Wednesdays between 15.30-16.30.

    Join us at the Digital Humanities Lab for an informal opportunity to catch up and meet new colleagues working on digital topics across HASS. Snacks and drinks will be provided. Colleagues from ESE and HLS with related interests are greatly welcomed too. If interest is high, we hope to make this a termly event, so please RSVP if you can't make it this time but would like to come in future.

    Nuffield Foundation/POST Fellowship for PhD students in natural and social sciences- Deadline Sunday 20 October

    PhD students and recent PhD graduates in any natural or social sciences are invited to apply for a fully funded 13-week fellowship in UK Parliament, supporting its use of research evidence. This is a great opportunity to see how Parliament works up close!

    Standing Up for Science Edinburgh Workshop- Friday 1 November- Deadline 21 October 2024

    Sense about Science will be running a FREE, practical, and interactive Standing up for Science workshop for Early Career Researchers (including PGRs) on Friday 1 November at the University of Edinburgh. The workshop aims to build the confidence and skills of ECRs/PGRs to engage in the public discourse around science, research, and the research process.


    Hear from researchers further along in their careers about their experiences, good and bad, of working with the media and policy worlds, from experienced media and policy professionals about how their worlds work and what they need from scientists to operate effectively, and receive tools and insights on how best to communicate some of the most complex issues of science and evidence.

    Digital Humanities- Workshops

    Workshops are held in the Digital Humanities Lab, Queen’s Building, Streatham Campus, Exeter. It is completely free to sign up and take part. These workshops are designed for all staff and postgraduates interested in developing their skills for research and teaching.

    For training workshops, sign-up through Eventbrite is essential as spaces are limited.

    Statement on the use of Generative AI

    All PGRs must include a statement in the title page of their upgrade portfolio or their thesis/dissertation which confirms if and how they have used Generative AI in the creation and preparation of their work. Full details are available in the TQA under the relevant chapter:
    - Section 5 at 11 - Presentation of theses/dissertations for Postgraduate Research degrees: statement of procedures
    - Section 6 at 9 - Upgrade from MPhil or MByRes to Doctoral Study

    Further work and consultation is underway regarding the use of AI in PGR Research. Please contact your PGR Support Team if you have any questions or feedback about the above.

    Careers in Public Policy and Government Week: Monday 21 – Friday 25 October

    Careers in Public Policy and Government Week is taking place Monday 21 – Friday 25 October.

    Careers in the public sector, policy and government are some of the most popular graduate destinations.

    Whether you are considering working in the Civil Service, or more locally within local government there are plenty of options, but these are not the only ones.  If you are interested in solving real-world problems that affect daily life such as education, health and national security you can also work for other public service agencies and public bodies such as the Health Service, Police, Think Tanks or research institutes to help shape policy.

    There are a range of careers and employability events taking place from Monday 21st October. You can find all the information about this week on the website and book your place on Handshake.

    PGR Study Space

    Join fellow PGRs in this online space, led by PGRs for PGRs to focus individually on whatever tasks you would like to work on. You can join the PGR Study Space Microsoft Teams Group here, or for further information, please contact Jo Sutherst.

    The PGR Study Space core facilitated hours are:

    Monday 10:00am-12:00pm
    Wednesday 10:00am-12:00pm
    Friday 10:00am-12:00pm

    There are unfacilitated sessions outside of these hours so you can fit it around your working patterns.

    1-2-1 career appointments available

    1-2-1 careers appointments with our dedicated PGR careers coach, Kenneth Howgill, are available to book on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Kenneth is a qualified and experienced career coach, lecturer and learning and development professional with over 20 years’ experience within the corporate sector, universities, further and adult education. He has held management roles in the public, corporate and not for profit sectors, leading professional development, coaching programmes, and recruiting graduates. Kenneth is a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He is a member of the European Mentoring and Coaching Council and holds a business degree, a master's in music and a professional career coaching qualification.

    All appointments are 50 minutes long. Please contact researcherdevelopment@exeter.ac.uk if there are any technical difficulties.

    Fika is back!

    Please join us on Tuesday 15 October in the Peter Lanyon staff room, Penryn Campus, at the slightly earlier time of 14.30, for an extra-special Fika delivered by Victoria Grimberg, founder of Fikanista.

    Join the Penryn Campus Sea Shanty Choir!

    Calling all seasoned sailors and landlubbers alike! Come and join our relaxed and friendly singing group for a weekly maritime singsong, guided by local musician and singer Charlotte Cripwell. Enjoy the mood-boosting effects of group singing while having fun and learning some traditional Cornish sea shanties.

    Nurture-U: Are you feeling worried about your thesis or other PhD work?

    The Nurture-U team are offering FREE resources and therapies to help with confidence and stress while doing your PhD.
    We have:
    1. An online toolkit, to help you track your mood over time and manage your busy lives
    2. An innovative app to build confidence,
    3. Online therapy, with a therapist or self-guided, and
    4. A resilience workbook, with support from a therapist.
    All these options have been proven to work, we’re just researching who responds best to what type of support. You can hopefully improve your wellbeing, earn shopping vouchers, and help other students in the future by contributing to research!

    Free Mindfulness Sessions for Wellbeing

    Mindfulness is a powerful practice of training our attention and an evidence-based way to tackle anxiety, stress and low mood. If you’re interested in exploring more, there is a variety of free internal options available for all colleagues.

    Sessions from the internal Mood Disorders Centre mindfulness team include: an eight-week MBCT-L course (2hrs weekly), an eight-week ‘deeper mindfulness’ course for those who’ve completed the MBCT-L course and bespoke ‘healthy mind’ sessions for whole teams, which can be delivered in-person or online.

    You may also be interested in trying mindful meditation in 30 min online sessions each Thursday lunchtime. This is a secular practice run by the Chaplaincy.

    Remember you can come along and meet the team or to ask any enquiries you might have at either of our helpdesk hubs below at any of our campuses:

    The Streatham PGR Hub is open from 10.00am – 3.00pm Monday to Friday. The Streatham Hub is situated in the Old Library Ground Floor next to the Quiet Study Space and Bill Douglas Centre.

    The St Luke’s PGR Hub is open from 10.00am – 3.00pm Monday to Thursday. Students wishing to access the hub should go to the Info at St Luke’s desk and request PGR support. The PGR team will then be called to see you.

    The Penryn PGR Support Office is open from 10.00am – 2.00pm Monday to Friday. It is based in the Postgraduate Suite in Daphne Du Maurier building 3 (next to the SU and opposite the Stannary).
