The beaver is the only animal species, other than humans, that is capable of felling a mature tree. Impressive, right? This large flat-tailed rodent, emblematic of Canada, plays the role of ecosystem engineer in the boreal forest. It is given this title because by building dams that raise the water level, it creates new habitats.
In the latest article in La Conversation Canada’s boreal forest series, Miguel Montoro Girona, Guillaume Grosbois and Mélanie Arsenault, ecology researchers at Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue (UQAT), are trying to demystify the secrets of beavers, in the context of ethical and sustainable forest management.
“We have everything to gain by learning more about the beaver’s habitat selection strategies so that we can learn to co-exist with them in harmony,” they write.

It will take a lot of strategic ingenuity to fight the rise of populism. And it will get harder to do so as politicians rig the game with rules designed to reduce voting.
