The HRPP Insider

Updates from the Human Research Protection Program serving Brown University, Brown University Health, and Care New England.

June 8, 2026

Post-Migration Update

The Brown Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) continues to actively reconcile post-migration issues following the transition to Huron IRB. We appreciate your patience as we work through these items and support researchers across the institution.

Known Migration Issues

The HRPP is addressing the following migration-related issues:

  • Creation of projects missed during migration

  • Addition of study personnel listed in IRBNet who did not migrate into Huron

  • Updates to proxy assignments where multiple proxies were intended but not fully migrated

  • Resolution of duplicate ID issues by removing purged IDs and adding verified IDs to active projects

If you identify an issue or need assistance with Huron IRB, please submit a request through SHIP, which allows the HRPP to track and resolve issues efficiently. Note: Projects categorized as Not Research, Not Human Subjects Research, or Not Engaged in Human Subjects Research were not migrated to Huron IRB.

Please include relevant details when submitting requests, such as:

  • Project name(s) and IRBNet number(s)

  • Missing personnel names

  • Proxy or access issues

  • Screenshots or error messages

Note: Due to current volume, proxy assignments by HRPP are temporarily limited to three individuals per project.

Brown IT Support Tickets

Because the Human Research Protection Program is now centralized under Brown University, Brown IT provides support for the Huron IRB system and related functions. Most system-related requests require the submission of a support ticket.

It is important to select the appropriate ticket type when submitting a request, as different ticket types require different information. To help researchers navigate this process efficiently, guidance documents are being developed and prioritized based on need.

As resources become available, they will be posted in the RAIS Knowledge Center. The RAIS Knowledge Center is a valuable resource for researchers, and we encourage you to bookmark it for future reference.

Huron Access and Registration

All individuals engaged in human subjects research must have an active Huron account. If you have not registered yet, please do so as soon as possible: Register here.

During the registration process, you may specify your preferred name and preferred email address. Once registration is complete, any changes to your name or email address must be requested through a support ticket submitted to Brown OIT.

For access or registration issues, contact Brown’s Office of Information Technology.

Training, Support, and Engagement Resources

The HRPP continues to provide robust support as researchers transition into Huron IRB. Researchers are strongly encouraged to register for live training sessions currently being offered, which provide hands-on system guidance and Huron Toolkit instruction.

Staying Connected with the HRPP

Researchers can stay engaged and receive support through multiple channels:

  • SHIP (Support Hub for Information and Planning): Submit questions or request consultations

  • Researcher Channel (Google Group): New collaborative forum replacing CREW Teams chat

  • CREW (Collaborative Research Engagement Workgroup): Monthly Zoom sessions (registration required)

  • HRPP Newsletter: Updates, training, and regulatory information

  • Brown HRPP Website: Policies, forms, guidance, and resources

More information can be found on the Need Assistance page.

Important Reminder: Population Modifications and Study Setup

Studies were migrated as project shells with limited information. Research teams are responsible for:

  • Reviewing project accuracy

  • Uploading only current active documents

  • Completing missing data fields

  • Updating personnel and administrative information

Please consult the Population Modification Guidance regularly, as it is updated frequently with clarifications and system-specific instructions.

Additional reminders:

  • Only current active documents should be uploaded (no historical/superseded files)

  • Only the PI or designated PI Proxy may submit items to the IRB

Thank you for your continued patience and engagement as we refine processes in Huron IRB.

Through the BIRCH initiative, the Brown HRPP will provide unified oversight for human subjects research across Brown University, Care New England, and Brown University Health, with Brown University serving as the IRB of record for all three institutions.
