Are you hearing from students having problems in your course?
Remember to send an Early Academic Report (EAR)

Just a reminder, if you have a student who is not performing well in your course please let the Dean of Studies Office know by using our Barnard-specific Early Academic Report (EAR). You may have just received the Columbia University ADR, but please use Barnard's EAR instead which is customized for Barnard and unlike Columbia’s document, does not ask you to just submit a grade on a student's current work, but instead gives you the opportunity to provide more insight into how and why a student might be underperforming.

The EAR makes it easier for our Class Deans to communicate with you and the student’s adviser, and to work as a team to help improve the student’s academic performance.  The EAR can be found here https://barnard-advocate.symplicity.com/public_report and is also available on the myBarnard portal.

How can Fall 2019 advising be less than a week away?
Didn't the semester just begin?

While it may feel like the spring semester just started, we are actually well on our way to preparing for the fall 2019 semester.  Student Planning opens next Monday, April 1, and online registration begins Monday, April 15.

Just a quick update to make certain you are comfortable with the process of granting your advisees "Permission to Register."  The "Grant Permission to Register" process happens at the beginning of each advising & registration period and allows the student to register for courses when the registration period opens.

Note: students are assigned registration appointments based on seniority so, if possible, meet with rising seniors and juniors first, then begin advising your first-years.

Here's how it works using screenshots to walk you through the process. More information can be found at "Instruction Manual for Advising & Registration."

Remember, if you don't properly click the "Grant Permission to Register," your Advisees will not be able to register for classes when their online registration period opens.

"GRANT PERMISSION TO REGISTER" PROCESS

Once you have met with your Advisees and reviewed their course selections and schedules, you then must grant them permission to register. To do so, start by clicking on the "Grant Permission to Register" bar in the WebAdvisor Menu as seen in the screenshot below.

  • Next, you will see the following screen that shows a list of your Advisees.  When you hover over the box next to the name of your Advisee, “Grant Permission to Register” will appear.  Click the box next to the name of the student you want to give permission to register and then click SUBMIT as seen at the bottom of the screenshot.
  • A date and a checked box will appear next to the name you’ve approved as you see in the screenshot below.  Please remember, permission to register cannot be reversed once you’ve submitted.  That's the process - nothing else is required.
  • Your Advisees will know if they have received permission to register by looking at their schedules in Student Planning. This first screenshot is what the students will see if you have NOT yet given permission.
  • The screenshot below is what the students will see once you HAVE granted permission for them to register.

If you have questions, please email registrar@barnard.edu. Remember, you can always check the 2018-19 Advising Guide and the Instruction Manual for Advising & Registration Systems for more information.
