Honouring Catherine Judge McGuinness was honoured by the University for her exceptional contribution as Chair of Údarás na hOllscoile from her appointment in February 2013 until January 2021, a period in which the campuses were transformed, new facilities for teaching and research were added, student numbers increased and there was rapid growth in research performance and global profile. NUI Galway in the Media - OÉ Gaillimh sna Meáin Payment of Wages Bill: A proposed new law is making its way through the Oireachtas which will see changes made to tipping and service charges on bills to ensure the money goes straight to staff, preventing employers from using tips to make up basic wages. Dr Deirdre Curran (J.E. Cairnes School of Business and Economics) who has conducted industry research, spoke to the Oireachtas Committee on Wednesday (@1.58.24) saying that the pandemic has exacerbated problems already present within the industry and that the situation has worsened for many who have stayed in the sector. Consent in primary schools: A new curriculum on consent and abusive relationships that will help to end violence against women will be rolled out in primary schools in the coming years. Dr Siobhan O'Higgins (Active* Consent Programme) discusses whether consent should be taught in primary schools on Virgin Media Ireland AM. Barrier to education: New research by Law student Áine Dillon and Professor Padraic Kenna (Centre for Housing Law, Rights and Policy) has found that the cost of purpose-built student accommodation is a barrier to full participation in third level from prospective students. The report shows that purpose-built student accommodation offered by Irish universities is relatively costly, compared with universities in Northern Ireland and some European universities. Severe flooding risk: A new study by Dr Thomas McDermott (J.E. New appointments - Ceapacháin nua Dr Una Murray joins Advisory Committee of the State-led Platform on Disaster Displacement (PDD) Dr Una Murray, Director of the Masters degree in International Development Practice, School of Geography, and Ryan Institute Principal Investigator (PI), has been invited to join the Advisory Committee of the State-led Platform on Disaster Displacement (PDD). The PDD was established in 2016 to follow up and implement the State-led Nansen Initiative for the Protection of Cross-Border Persons in the Context of Disasters and Climate Change. Una will work with other international experts on the PDD to provide input and strategic advice to the Chair and the Steering Group of the PDD, and support the implementation of activities in the PDD’s workplan.
