Message from the CEO

As we continue to navigate 2023, many people are being impacted by economic pressures. These are heightened by ongoing physical, social and emotional health challenges from the pandemic and natural disasters.

Despite this, many across the mental health and suicide prevention systems remain hopeful and work towards delivering current investment and reforms. The Commission is committed to ensuring a person-centred system that is Integrated, Available (affordable and accessible), Localised, and Accountable to each person and their unique needs.

The National Workplace Initiative (NWI) is seeking feedback on the Mentally Healthy Workplaces digital platform in its beta state. 

The platform includes modules on a range of topics associated with the three pillars of the Blueprint for Mentally Healthy Workplaces. Visit the platform and provide feedback to help shape its development.

Head of the National Suicide Prevention Office, Dr Michael Gardner, joined LGBTQ+ Health Australia's podcast The Latest to discuss the work of the NSPO, the development of a new prevention strategy and the importance of his lived experience of mental ill health in his work.

The Commission welcomes the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia's new research report Best for the Bush which highlights the health challenges of regional and remote communities. This report aims to bring RFDS, government, service partners and communities to work together to improve primary health care access.

Person-Centred and consumer Directed Mental Health Care

The Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Research and Education Group released a report exploring how the concepts of person-centred care and consumer directed care are understood and experienced in Australia’s mental health and suicide prevention systems. Funded by the Commission, the project worked with consumers, carers, practitioners and policy makers to identify key themes, tensions and possibilities relating to these care concepts.
