Christchurch Wastewater Treatment Plant update

We're moving to weekly newsletters

Our new schedule for these updates is to send you something each Thursday. This means we can provide relevant updates without repeating ourselves. However, if something important comes up, we'll be sure to increase the frequency as required to keep you informed.

Pond health and odour, and what to expect this weekend

The ponds seem to be adapting to winter mode as well as we could hope for. We have a potentially cold and wet weekend coming up, which could see us transition fully. We’ll continue to monitor and respond if anything changes.

Abatement notice cancelled

Environment Canterbury has cancelled the abatement notice it issued earlier this year in relation to odour from the Christchurch Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The decision follows an independent assessment, which confirmed that Christchurch City Council has met the requirements of the notice. As a result, the abatement notice is no longer required. Environment Canterbury will keep monitoring our progress.

Construction update

We're close to having all the stone columns installed under the new odour treatment plant area of the activated sludge plant. Once we've tested to make sure everything's up to specification, we'll start installing the remaining columns under the plant itself. As of Wednesday morning, we'd installed 292 of the 1600 columns the facility will need overall.

The black PE pipe you may have noticed onsite will be used to move treated sewage from the new plant to clarifiers, and sludge will be returned to the new plant. We'll install them over the coming months. The pipe-welding machine is arriving soon, and we're setting it up for some test welds over the coming week.

The design for the RAS/WAS pump station modification is progressing well. We need contractor input on these elements, as they're challenging to install during the transition from the temporary process to the new plant.

Tune in to Monday's Community Board update

At 4.30pm on Monday 11 May, Gary Watson and Adam Twose will provide their regular project report at the the Waitai Coastal‑Burwood‑Linwood Community Board meeting.

This session is an information update only. It’s simply an opportunity to keep the Board and community informed about the work that's underway.

The briefing will be livestreamed here, and a recording will be available after the meeting. If you’d like to attend in person, the meeting will be held at the Waitai Community Board room on the corner of Union and Beresford streets.

Aerator update

We now have a number of the new aerators onsite. Our electrical contractor is also onsite, and we're powering through the paperwork we need to get underway. We hope to have the first of the aerators up and running in the next six to eight weeks.

Pond health status

The team monitoring the ponds have recorded the gradual improvement in the health of Pond 3, so we've moved the pond health tracker to green.
