I started at Caltech in 2004 as a graduate student after completing my BS and MS degrees in mechanical engineering at UC San Diego. My research passion has always been metallurgy, with a focus on manufacturing. After my PhD, I briefly worked in industry before founding JPL’s Metallurgy Facility in 2010, a lab designed to study new materials and manufacturing technologies for extreme environment spacecraft. In 2012, I was fortunate enough to be awarded the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers from President Obama for my work in this area. I have been teaching continuously at Caltech since 2010, including graduate level Structure and Bonding in Solids and undergraduate level Mechanical Behavior of Materials Laboratory Course. My wife, Carrie, and I met as graduate students at Caltech and now we have four kids together. Sahil PatelGraduate Student, Applied Physics and Materials Science I am primarily interested in superconductive materials for the development of superconducting nanowire single photon detectors. My primary focus is the fabrication and testing of new detector technologies and designing testing grounds to better characterize performance. Eventually, I hope that my work will push SNSPD sensitivity to lower energy photons in the mid-infrared and enables larger working active areas for imaging and dark matter searches. I am in my third year as a PhD student in materials science, although I began my Caltech/JPL journey in 2019 as a co-op JPL intern in the Superconducting Devices Group under Dr. Matt Shaw, who is currently co-advising me with Professor Joseph Falson. Outside of research, I primarily enjoy trail running, climbing, and really trashy reality TV. Opportunities include calls for proposals released by private foundations, public charities, associations, corporations, internal Caltech opportunities and federal limited opportunities. |
