Postgraduate Experimental Mechanics Conference (PGEM)

2-3 May 2024
The National Physical Laboratory (NPL), Teddington, London, UK

The BSSM's Eighth PGEM Conference aims to bring together PhD/MPhil postgraduate students and early career researchers involved in the field of Engineering measurement and experimental techniques in stress, strain and vibration analysis. The conference provides an excellent opportunity to share and discuss their current research in a low pressure and relatively informal environment, learn about research projects at other institutions, network amongst like-minded people and make contacts for the future.

The conference is also an ideal opportunity for professionals from academia and industry to learn more about the cutting edge research currently taking place within UK Engineering technology institutions.

Sessions will be co-chaired between the student attendees / academics. A ‘Best Presentation Competition’ sponsored by Instron will be run during the conference based on peer-assessed judging by all attendees.

Prizes will be awarded to the winner and runners up for the amount of £125, £75 and £50.

Experimental Mechanics Workshop

26 - 28 February 2024
University of Bristol, UK

Registration deadline 27 January 2024

The overarching aim and key learning outcome of the workshop is to provide a working knowledge of a range of techniques to allow the most appropriate techniques to be selected for specific applications. On completion of the workshop participants will be able to:

• Understand testing procedures and the adaptations required to utilise the techniques presented.
• Apply modern full-field non-contact imaging techniques such as Thermoelastic Stress Analysis (TSA) and Digital Image Correlation (DIC) for materials characterisation and performance assessment.
• Understand non-destructive evaluation (NDE) and structural health monitoring (SHM) including application of ultrasound, thermography, acoustic emission (AE), eddy current, and X-ray.
• Understand how the techniques can be combined with each other and with numerical models.
• Be able to manipulate and interpret data from experimental techniques to provide a detailed understanding of structural performance of fibre reinforced polymer composites.
