Pieces of the asteroid Bennu are being studied at the NASA-funded Reflectance Experiment Laboratory (RELAB), which is housed on the University’s campus and led by Brown planetary scientist Ralph Milliken.

Brown recognizes outstanding research and scholarship through annual Research Achievement Awards. Early Career Awards and Distinguished Achievement Awards will be given in 2025. Nominations are now open on InfoReady.

Workday Grant Roles access change with Huron Grants

An access change is coming this December for Workday Grant Roles (Grant Manager, Grant Financial Analyst) with the Huron Grants system changeover from Coeus. Details announced on Nov. 6. 

Huron access for grants work

When Huron Grants replaces Coeus in December, you do not need to submit an access ticket if you already had access to Coeus; you will retain that level of access for Huron Grants. Details announced on Nov. 6.

RESEARCH STRATEGY AND DEVELOPMENT

Increased support for humanities research

On Nov. 7, Brown Provost Francis J. Doyle III announced increased support for humanities research at Brown. Updated deadlines, guidelines, and award amounts are now available for both the Salomon Research Awards and Humanities Research Fund.

Important Salomon Research Awards update

Additional support for larger grants (up to $30,000) will be made available exclusively for faculty in the arts, humanities, and humanistic social sciences; In addition, there is no longer a preference for junior faculty. The new deadline is Monday, Dec. 2, 2024 (noon).

Develop your DEIB plan for federal research proposals

RSD is hosting a 3-part series of mini-webinars on writing DEIB plans in federally funded research. Join our noon sessions on NIH (Nov. 21) or NSF (Dec. 3), or view the Oct. 31 recorded Zoom session on DOE. Register online.

BEARCORE registration open for January 2024

The BEARCORE Responsible Conduct of Research training course is open for registration. Participants will be required to meet in person on Jan. 15 & 16. This course fulfills NIH and NSF RCR training requirements.

BBII accepting pre-proposals for annual Pilot Awards

Brown Biomedical Innovations to Impact (BBII) awards develop and add value to biomedical technologies to increase the probability of licensing and commercialization. Pre-proposals due Dec. 6. Visit BBII Pilot Awards or email bbii-projects@brown.edu for more information.

Rhode Island Life Sciences Hub, January 2025

RILSH will host a statewide neuroscience conference to highlight the breadth and depth of neuroscience/neurotech work in Rhode Island, demonstrating the state as a center for neuro-related innovation. The daylong event will take place Jan. 28, 2025, at 225 Dyer. 

Brown joins MIT-led I-Corps

Brown has joined seven other regional university partners in an MIT-led NSF-funded Innovation Corps (I-Corps) Hub to accelerate innovation and translation of research to the marketplace. The I-Corps Hub, which launches Jan. 1, 2025, extends from Rhode Island to Maine.

Huron Grants transition FAQs and key dates

For additional information about the COEUS retirement and Huron implementation, visit the Grants Timeline and the Grants Transition FAQs.

Pause on Outgoing Subaward requests starts Nov. 22

Outgoing Subawards requests—both new and modifications—will be paused at the close of business on Nov. 22. Outgoing Subaward requests may resume on Dec. 9 in the Huron Research Suite.

Updated FAQ on travel lodging itemized receipts

The Sponsored Travel Policy FAQ has been updated to include additional guidance on providing proof of stay to support lodging booked through third-party agencies (i.e., Expedia, etc.) and requirements for itemized receipts.

Childcare reimbursement requests

Must be processed via miscellaneous payment using spend category ‘NIH or other grant funded childcare allowance (9240)’. This is a taxable benefit reported on Form 1099-NEC. Check additional guidance for funding from NIH on NRSA fellowships and institutional training grants.

Critical deadlines for financial reports to sponsors

Holiday breaks are approaching. Be mindful of Post Award Services due dates. Reports not received by the due dates will be submitted as-is for OSP to maintain compliance with sponsors, and adjustments will not be possible.

Assistance from the Brown Internal Consulting Group

Consultants will assist with Pre- and Post-Award Service functions as we ramp up activities related to the transition to the Huron Research Suite. You can expect to hear from them periodically through January 2025.

  • Site-Wide Search, found on the homepage as well as by clicking the magnifying glass icon in the upper right corner of any screen, is powered by Google, enabling users to search for keywords and phrases across the entire site.
  • Search Topics offers a curated list of topics. Users can search for pages using these preassigned page tags.
  • If you are not sure which page the content you are looking for appears on, we suggest using the site-wide search.

Highlight your research achievements on @BrownUResearch social media

Promote your research or award and share your accomplishments with a broader audience. Complete the Brown Research/Award Submissions form and we'll follow up with posts on Instagram, X, and Threads. 

Request photo/video coverage

To request research-related photo or video coverage (faculty or student researchers, events, classroom/field/lab work, presentations, etc.) complete the Research Related Photo/Video Coverage Request form.

 

NSF

NSF implemented Multi-Factor Authentication for Research.gov

On Oct. 27, Research.gov was updated to require Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). Implementation guidance is available from NSF and from Brown’s OIT Service Center.
