For the past four decades, the winter of discontent of 1978-79 has been one of the great bogeymen of British politics. It swept Margaret Thatcher’s Conservatives into power and has been used to justify moves like decapitating the trade unions and privatising much of the public realm.
Now, says Steve Schifferes, another difficult winter approaches as the UK faces everything from an energy crisis to food shortages to the end of furlough to potentially more COVID restrictions. While we are unlikely to see a return to 20% annual inflation or an IMF bailout, he argues that in some ways the situation facing the country today is worse. Also don’t miss our deep dives into the reasons behind the energy crisis and carbon dioxide shortages.
While Britain might be having another 1970s moment, the same is not true of China. According to this new briefing, President Xi Jinping’s recent crackdowns on groups including teenage gamers and tech tycoons should not be viewed in the same light as Mao’s cultural revolution. Finally, we look at how becoming vegan can change your social life.
