In this issue we bring you an important update from Waka Kotahi regarding applications for access to the Motor Vehicle Register (MVR), which affects registered traders.

Section 241 access to the MVR expires soon – apply now

Waka Kotahi is currently taking applications for access, under standard conditions, to the personal information in the Motor Vehicle Register.
 
Commonly referred to as ‘section 241 access’, this applies to fuel retailers, vehicle traders, vehicle insurers, and finance companies. The current access period will expire on 31 October 2022, unless a renewal application is submitted and approved by then. To be sure applications are processed in time, they should be submitted as early as possible. 
 
Section 241 is the part of the Land Transport Act that allows access to the Register under a set of standard conditions.
 
This year, Waka Kotahi has strengthened the security requirements for information in the Motor Vehicle Register. This means that if you’re applying for access to the register, you’ll need to provide more details than you have in the past. It’s recommended that you allow 3-4 hours to complete your application to explain in detail how you will manage the new security and privacy requirements.
 
Alternatively, there are four industry bodies that have made an application on behalf of their members. You don’t need to apply to Waka Kotahi if you are a member of the Motor Trade Association (MTA), Financial Services Federation (FSF), Insurance Council of NZ (ICNZ), or National Automotive Industry Technology Association (NAITA).
