Highlights

A Whole Lot of Okra

A Whole Lot of Okra event was held at Harry Bailey Memorial Library in partnership with North Coast Settlement Services (NCSS), supported by a grant from the Department of Home Affairs to strengthen community cohesion.

Local Coffs Harbour cultural groups from Ethiopia Anuak, Iraqi Yazidi, Myanmar Zomi and Indian Punjab, came together to cook and share a variety of dishes, all celebrating okra—a versatile vegetable used across many cultures.

Using food as a universal language, the event fosters intercultural understanding, social connection, and empathy by highlighting okra as a shared cultural ingredient.

More than 70 people attended and enjoyed a vibrant photo exhibition, a short documentary exploring how different communities use okra and other cultural foods, and samples of okra-based dishes prepared by participating cultural groups.

From farm-to-plate, A Whole Lot of Okra: The Showcase is on display on Level 2 at Harry Bailey Memorial Library until early June.
