Bioimage Analysis Workshops (ImageJ and QuPath)

Would you like to know more about the fundamentals of bioimage analysis and how to use the popular free scientific imaging software ImageJ/Fiji and QuPath to create informative figures and extract quantitative data from your images?

Join us for a series of interconnected, hands-on workshops (in-person only) being held at St Lukes (South Cloisters 2.13).  The room is equipped with computers and will have software pre-installed, however these can be folded down allowing use of personal laptops if you prefer. If you wish to use your own computer, please install the software in advance.

All are welcome and attendance is free. No experience is required.  Spaces are limited so please only register if you are sure you can attend.

    Macro Programming in Fiji
    Wednesday 20 November 2024 (2.30 pm - 5.30 pm) – James Crichton.
Learn how to use ImageJ macro programming language to automate tasks in ImageJ and Fiji.

    Introduction to QuPath
    Friday 29 November 2024 (1 pm - 4 pm) - Nicolas Verschueren Van Rees.
Learn how to use this software for segmenting images and extracting quantitative data. The winning entries were:

1st place - Blueberries for Osteoarthritis, Lauren Struszczak (Arts and Culture Commendation also). See image above.
2nd place - The Real Guardians of Arrakis, Adam Porter.
3rd place - Josh at Stockwell Skatepark, Paul O'Connor.

    Congratulations to this year’s winners!

Dr Chris Wood who has overseen the competition since its inception commented:
The variety of striking research images never ceases to amaze me. It’s been a fascinating journey and it’s exciting to see our research evolving across the University in such a striking and visual way. As ever, the entries this year are a fantastic way for us to communicate the broad range of research that is taking place across the University to a diverse and engaged audience.” Dr Chris Wood, Head of Researcher Development and Research Culture

Making research assessment fairer – find out how you can communicate your research achievements in a compelling way without relying on metrics

    Tuesday 18 March 2025 (2 pm - 3 pm) - Online.

Universities, research teams, and individual researchers all want their research achievements and capabilities to be recognised fairly. Increasingly ‘metrics’ - quantitative indicators, like journal impact factors or university rankings – have become the go-to proxies for assessing research quality and scientific contributions. But metrics can also misrepresent and disadvantage researchers, distorting the work they choose to do, or where they choose to publish it, and holding back careers or whole disciplines.

Led by Professor Rob Anderson, Chair of our Responsible Metrics Champions group, this workshop will explore what responsible metrics are and how you can communicate your research achievements in a compelling way, whilst also avoiding some of the common traps associated with less responsible research assessment.
