Welcome to the March newsletter

Picture of frosty campus

Dear

March has certainly been an unpredictable month in terms of weather, but this always enables us to get great pictures of our beautiful campus.

This month Vice-Chancellor, Professor Charles Egbu, has been honoured for his contribution to architecture and Leeds Trinity has been nominated for a Whatuni Student Choice Award. The results will be announced on 26 April.

We would also like to say Ramadan Mubarak to all those observing Ramadan. You can find out more about what this means to our Muslim community, as staff member Samar Haikal has shared a blog. Read more.

International Women's Day

In October last year, we shared a blog by Aylish Griffiths (Foundation degree in Supporting Learning and Additional Needs, 2021) about her breast cancer journey.

To mark International Women's Day on 8 March, Aylish shared her thoughts on what the day means for her and why is it important we celebrate it. Read Aylish's blog.

'Little Bits of God' Artwork hosted on site

Leeds Trinity is proud to be currently hosting the ‘Little Bits of God’ artwork depicting stories from the Bible in a mosaic. It helps bring scriptures and key gospels to life in a modern and engaging way.

The piece is on display in the University chapel in Horsforth until 31 May. Read more.

Another successful Writers Festival

We were delighted to host another very successful Writers' Festival on campus earlier this month.

There was a great turnout and most of the sessions were led by our own graduates. Jane Browne (Creative Writing, 2018) is pictured leading one of the breakout sessions. More pictures.

SPARK

SPARK is a social justice project for young adults aged 18 to 30 years, which is part of the Leeds Diocese Justice and Peace Commission, and working with key partnerships such as Leeds Trinity University and Leeds Church Institute. Many young adults do not actively participate in the life of the Church and SPARK aims to make the connection with faith, Catholic Social Teaching and social justice issues.

SPARK is offering the opportunity for people in their target age range to be a SPARK supporter or identified key person or “animator”, paid to lead a group from their own networks or contacts. Training and support is provided along with sessional input from creative professionals.

You can follow SPARK on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram or for further information email Kathy.

Featured alumni – Danny Hardaker

Danny graduated from TV Studies in 2011 and has since returned as a guest speaker to inspire our students. He was supported by the Careers Team as a student after he realised he wanted to run his own business:

"During my second year I began thinking about my future and what career I really wanted. My passion was film making and I really wanted a hands on role behind the camera."

Danny is currently celebrating as a short Channel 4 funded documentary he worked on with Karol Wyszynski, Riley & Rambo, won an award for best documentary at the White Rose International Film Festival.

Riley & Rambo is a story of a boy and his horse that offers insight into the Rag n’ Bone culture of Holme Wood, Bradford. With a backdrop of deprivation we discover the resourcefulness and happiness that’s found in an older and genuine way of life; where freedom can be found.
