The Newsletter for the EAS Community

Message from the Chair

EAS Community,

I hope you all had time to relax and reflect over the Memorial Day weekend. As we enter the final stretch of the term, I want to bring a few important Division items to your attention.

Last week, Professor Carver Mead delivered an outstanding Watson Lecture on "Historic Innovations by Caltech People That Transformed Our Everyday Lives." The talk highlighted significant contributions from Caltech faculty, students, and alumni to the modern electronics revolution – starting with integrated circuits and reaching to the present with current work in the fields of neuromorphic engineering and AI. If you missed it, I encourage you to watch the recording.

I also want to acknowledge some additional honors received by EAS faculty. First, Ares Rosakis, the Theodore von Kármán Professor of Aeronautics and Mechanical Engineering, has been named a foreign member of the Royal Society. This is the United Kingdom's national academy of sciences and the oldest scientific academy in continuous existence. Additionally, Joel Tropp, the Steele Family Professor of Applied and Computational Mathematics, has been named a 2024 Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS), one of the highest honors in the field of statistics.

Congratulations to Professors Rosakis and Tropp!

EAS Staff Highlight

Congratulations to Jenni Campbell, MCE Options Manager, who received this year’s ASCIT Staff Appreciation Award at the 69th Annual Staff Service & Impact Awards. This award recognizes the exceptional contributions of Caltech staff members on behalf of the undergraduate community.

Spotlight On Our People

Ivy Chen

Ivy Chen

Graduate Student, Applied Physics and Materials Science

I am a G2 in Applied Physics, working in Professor Austin Minnich’s group. Prior to my arrival at Caltech, I got my BS in Physics from Harvey Mudd College, where I worked on experimentally demonstrating a class of entangled states called one-way Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering. After my undergraduate studies, I worked as a software engineer at Google for two years before moving onto graduate school. While at Google, I worked on shopping ads relevance and safety across all search platforms. At Caltech, my research focuses on atomic layer etching (ALE), a novel subtractive nanofabrication technique that can achieve angstrom-level control over etching through self-limiting, sequential chemical modifications. I develop and characterize the chemical processes of ALE recipes for photonic materials like lithium niobate. In my free time, I enjoy running, playing video games, and trying all the new foods that Pasadena and LA have to offer.

Deepro Pasha

Undergraduate Student, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

I am Deepro Pasha, an undergraduate junior at Caltech. My major is in electrical engineering, and my minor is in computer science. I am interested in applying electrical engineering and computer science knowledge to the medical field in unconventional, original, and impactful ways - I have been conducting research applying machine learning to improve medical imaging as a SURF fellow for the last two years, which I am continuing next summer at Stanford University. I am also creating data traversal algorithms to better visualize genetic data with UCSC’s Genomics Institute. My hobbies include playing guitar, reading and watching science fiction, and playing video games - I also create electronic music with my club “Musictech”. Caltech helped broaden my lens for viewing the scientific world and expanded my idea about what I am capable of.

We'd like to feature you!

Announcing the Fifth EAS AI Bootcamp: Reinforcement Learning

The fifth AI bootcamp will take place from June 10-14, 2024 in collaboration with Professor Adam Wierman’s group. During the bootcamp, you will dive into the fundamentals of Reinforcement Learning (RL), learn how to implement and optimize RL algorithms, and explore computational techniques that leverage these principles for solving complex decision-making and control problems. This course is designed for Caltech graduate students and researchers and aims to accelerate their research productivity through the practical applications of Reinforcement Learning. Learn more about prerequisites and how to join. Deadline for registration: June 6, 2024.
