Te Kaha Surrounding Streets

Madras Street resurfacing this week

With the rainy weather last week, the final road resurfacing on Madras Street was postponed.

Madras Street, between Tuam and Cashel Streets, will be resurfaced this week. The work will take place over night, from 9pm - 6am, starting Wednesday. Work is expected to finish by 6am on Friday 9 May. Read the detour notice.

A section of Madras Street, between Cashel Street and Hereford Street, will be resurfaced in the coming months. During the course of the project, some issues with the brick barrel pipe that runs the length of Madras Street were discovered. The pipe was built in the late 1800s and forms part of the major stormwater network for the city.

We plan to make repairs now, to avoid further issues in the future. A lane closure will be in place while this work is done, and the final road resealing will follow. We apologise for any inconvenience.

The road resurfacing and intersection paving on Barbadoes Street and Tuam Street are finished. Traffic management measures will be reduced as planned, from mid-May. All other minor works, including planting, traffic light commissioning and footpath paving, will proceed as planned.

The finishing touches

With the major, high-impact roadworks wrapping up this month, attention now turns to minor works like traffic light commissioning, planting and footpath resurfacing. These finishing touches will be added over the next few months. Some temporary lane or shoulder closures will be required in some cases, to keep crews safe while the work.

Traffic light commissioning
Thirteen intersections have received traffic light upgrades as part of the project. Our contractors are currently testing and commissioning the new lights. All the new traffic lights should be up and running by the end of May.

Landscaping
A mix of shrubs, groundcover and trees are being planted in the new raingardens and garden beds around the stadium. It will take around three months for all 5,176 plants to go in.

Footpath resealing
The final layer of asphalt will be added to the footpaths on Barbadoes, Tuam and Madras Streets immediately surrounding the stadium in the coming months. The final layer will be installed in conjunction with works in the stadium grounds.

Street furniture
New seats, benches, cycle stands and signage are being installed on Barbadoes, Madras, Tuam and Lichfield Street (west of the stadium).

Progress photos

The intersection paving and resurfacing on Barbadoes Street is finished. New streetlights are being installed.

The paving in the Tuam Street and Madras Street intersection is finished, along with the resurfacing along Tuam Street.

The last section of paving along Lichfield Street, west of the stadium, is underway.

Planting has started around the site. Here's a look at progress on Tuam Street.
