Principal’s Report
|
 |
| |
While students enjoyed an extra day at home on Monday, our staff were engaged in a full day of professional learning focused on strengthening teaching practice, student safety and the systems we use to ensure every student is supported to make progress.
Mr Alan Ramsey began the day by sharing an overview of our 2026 NAPLAN Story, looking beyond individual results to consider achievement, student growth and longer-term trends. There is much to celebrate, with Subiaco continuing to demonstrate very strong student achievement and growth. Staff then worked collaboratively in year-level teams to reflect on what is currently working well, where our strengths lie and where there may be opportunities to strengthen our practice further. This work will help inform our next Business Plan, operational planning and the work of our English and Mathematics committees. A more detailed analysis of the 2026 NAPLAN data will be presented to the School Board at its next meeting.
Ms Cassie Zadow then presented our updated school lockdown procedures. Staff worked through the different types of lockdowns, their responsibilities and the processes designed to ensure a clear and consistent response across the school. We will conduct a practice lockdown later this term and will communicate with families before this occurs.
Our final session was facilitated by Statewide Services from the Department of Education WA and followed on from our previous professional learning focused on the development of a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS). In our first session, the focus was on Tier 1. This time, staff explored Tier 2 and Tier 3.
While the terminology may sound complex, the principle is quite straightforward. We want to ensure that every child receives excellent teaching and support every day, while having clear processes for identifying and responding when a student needs something more.
The foundation is Tier 1, which is the high-quality teaching, wellbeing and engagement support provided to all students. At Subiaco, this brings together much of the work we have undertaken over recent years, including our Impact Teaching Practice model aligned with the Department of Education WA’s Teaching for Impact, our Centre for Excellence in the Explicit Teaching of Literacy and our inclusive classroom practices.
When assessment and other information show us that a student is not making the progress we would expect despite strong Tier 1 teaching, Tier 2 provides more targeted support, often in a small group. Importantly, intervention is matched to the particular skill or area of need and student progress is monitored to determine whether the support is working. For the smaller number of students requiring more intensive support, Tier 3 provides highly individualised intervention.
Our work now is to continue mapping these systems across learning, wellbeing and engagement so that there is a clear and consistent pathway from early identification of need, through to intervention and monitoring of progress. It is an important next step in our continuous improvement journey and in ensuring that we respond early when a student needs additional support.
Warm regards
Heather McNeil

Subi PS is a Your Move School
This means we are committed to encouraging our students to use bikes, scooters, walking and public transport to get to and from school safely more often.
We will be holding a Walk, Scoot or Ride to school event early next term.
To help us in our planning we would appreciate you filling out the linked short survey which will:
-
enable us to find out more about how you travel to school,
-
discuss challenges you face to using alternative modes of transport to get to school
-
and where possible to find solutions to these challenges to reduce the number of cars at drop off and pick times, to create a safer space around our school environment.
Your Move Parent Survey
Cheers, Michelle and Dan.

An Athletics Week to Remember!
|
 |
| |
What an absolutely jam-packed and amazing carnival week! We kicked things off on Tuesday with our long jump, throws and middle-distance finals, followed by the Junior Carnival on Thursday and the Senior Carnival on Friday.
Our students were outstanding! They gave every event their absolute best, and it was wonderful to see their weeks of training and hard work pay off. The Senior Carnival delivered one of the most exciting finishes we have ever seen, with the lead changing more than ten times throughout the day. With only four events remaining, the scores were tied!
Congratulations to our final place getters:
Llewellyn – 2,058 points
Klein – 2,037 points
Julius – 1,971 points
It has been wonderful to receive so much positive feedback from parents about the carnival and what a fantastic day it was for our school community.
A huge thank you to our wonderful teachers for all the time and effort they put into training the students in the lead-up to the carnivals, as well as their incredible help across the three days.
Thank you to Vince, our gardener, for all his hard work getting the oval up to scratch and looking fantastic for the week.
Thank you also to our amazing P&C for running the famous food stall, which was once again a massive hit!
My biggest thank you, however, goes to our incredible students. You absolutely crushed it! Your effort, enthusiasm and sportsmanship made the entire week such a joy to be part of.
We now look forward to cheering on our Subiaco team at the Interschool Athletics Carnival in Week 10!

Year 5 Fremantle Prison Excursion!
|
 |
| |
On Friday 14 August, the Year 5 classes went on an excursion to Fremantle Prison. This excursion aligns with our History unit for the term, which centres around the Early Settlers and their impacts on Australia.
We split into groups and everyone went on two tours, the Convict History Tour and the Modern History Tour. We had very informative tour guides, and we enjoyed a lot of re-enactments as well as interesting stories about prison escapes! Here were some highlights:
‘The tour guides were very experienced and told us a lot of information. They made the excursion really fun such as when we went into the solitary confinement cell!’ ~ Isabelle S and Rose H
‘We loved all the stories such as Moondyne Joe’s many escapes! We also enjoyed the story about the prisoner who broke back into jail!’ ~ Sofia P & Norah F
‘It was really cool to see the cells and know that people actually lived in them. We really liked learning about the how they managed to survive with poor quality resources and little to no light.’ ~ Phoebe T & Sam K
‘We liked it when we got to up into the tower and to see the cells. They told us so many stories about the escapes from prison. It was also interesting about why Fremantle Prison closed.’ ~ Chloe M & Orli S

Year 6 National Science Week Excursion
The Year 6 students celebrated National Science Week with an excursion to Scitech on Monday. They participated in a range of engaging activities, including the Spring Loaded theatre show, where they explored how springs work, the factors that affect them and examples of springs found in nature.
Students also took part in a hands-on laboratory investigation into biosecurity, enjoyed the To Space and Back Planetarium show, and explored the many interactive exhibits throughout the general exhibition. Click HERE for photos.
Henry - I loved the Planetarium because it actually felt like I was in space.
Paddy - The Planetarium was excellent even though I felt dizzy!
Mads - I liked the dark room where everything glowed fluoro.
