Brown researchers launch tool to map World Cup players, fans and potential to spread disease
With the FIFA World Cup 2026 competition kicking off in cities across North America, a Brown University research team is making it easy to track infectious diseases that could be spread by teams, players and fans.

As part of the Division of Research’s Reducing Red Tape in Research (3RI) initiative to minimize administrative burdens, we have launched a new contracting resource. Unsure which Brown University office should review, draft, or assist with your agreement? Use the Contract Support Decision Tool on the 3RI website to quickly identify the correct office and receive guidance on the next steps for your project.
In late May, the White House Office of Management and Budget published a proposal to significantly revise the Guidance for Federal Financial Assistance (Uniform Guidance) covering government-wide policies for federal grants. We recognize the implications these proposed changes could have for research universities, scientific collaboration, and the broader research enterprise, and we share the concerns many in our community have raised. Brown is actively engaged on this issue. To advocate for policies that support research excellence, University leaders, faculty, and research staff are carefully reviewing the proposal and working closely with Rhode Island's congressional delegation and COGR, AAU, and APLU, which have published an Executive Brief outlining five key issues for immediate attention.
The public comment period closes on July 13. Information and resources to assist members of the Brown community interested in submitting comment letters was provided in Today@Brown on June 24. Please reach out to the Division of Research (federalupdates@brown.edu) with any questions.

Brown Professor George Karniadakis wins prestigious applied mathematics prize
Brown University’s George Karniadakis received the 2026 William Benter Prize in Applied Mathematics from City University of Hong Kong, recognizing his pioneering contributions to computational mathematics, scientific machine learning, stochastic modeling, and real-world scientific applications.

Reminder: Traveling internationally with research items
Recently, two researchers at an NIH lab were charged with smuggling mpox into the US. As a reminder, when traveling internationally, export controls apply when you leave the US and import controls apply when you return to the US.
PHS and DOE funded Investigators have continuous COI reporting obligations
A reminder to the Public Health Service and Dept. of Energy Investigator community that if they acquire or receive a new Significant Financial Interest (SFI) during the year, they must report the new SFI on Brown's electronic COI form within 30 days. PHS/DOE Investigators cannot wait until the next annual cycle (Feb 2027) to report new SFIs received during CY 2026.
Research security training compliance now tracked in Workday Learning
Certificates are no longer required in Huron FPs. Research security training is now tracked directly using the Workday Learning transcript. Confirm your completion status in Workday using the "My learning transcript" report. Contact researchsecurity@Brown.edu with any questions. Grants coordinators can request daily compliance report access through researchsecurity@brown.edu.
Delinquent effort reports
With year-end approaching, resolving outstanding effort reports is critical. These reports are vital for federal compliance and audit protection. Please submit delinquent effort reports immediately to safeguard university funding and minimize audit risk.
