Law School Bulletin September 2023
Welcome back to the Law School as we celebrate our Centenary Year! As you now approach the end of your first week of term, I hope that you have enjoyed reconnecting with your friends and my academic colleagues. We are delighted to have you back and it is wonderful to feel the start of term buzz in the Amory Building and around campus.
You have reached the pivotal moment in your academic journey with us as you begin the final year of your law degree. This year often brings with it moments of excitement and trepidation, joy and anxiety. You have the thrill of exclusively studying the modules you have chosen and I encourage you to make the most of every moment in the classroom. Engage in critical argumentation and build friendships in your seminars. Law school is a great place to start building your network for life after University, whether you go into legal practice or pursue a different career pathway. Be kind to your peers and support one another as you go through this year together.
We know that you are not only grappling with the challenges of managing your academic studies but many of you will also be proactively thinking about what to do next as a career. Remember to reach out to your subject academics, your academic personal tutor and the Employability team if you need support. We are here to help you as you navigate your way through the final year of study.
I hope to see many of you around the campus and please do say ‘hello’ if you pass me. All that remains for me to say is that I hope you have a fantastic first term!

We have a series of events planned for the Law School community this term - a chance to socialise and connect with fellow students and Law School academics in an informal way. See below for details of our Questions and Answers session, first of our film nights and a LIVE Law Cook-along!
Film Night:
12 Angry Men is an American legal drama film from 1957.
It tells the story of a jury of 12 men as they deliberate the conviction or acquittal of a teenager charged with murder. There is disagreement and conflict among the jurors which forces them to question their own morals and values.
Booking will be essential and an Eventbrite link will be circulated in due course.
Our Q&A session is a chance for you to pop in for an informal chat with two of our Law School academic staff: Dr Matthew Channon is the Director of Undergraduate Studies and Dr David Yuratich the Deputy Director of Education and Student Experience. Any questions at all about your LLB, come along and ask them.

1 - 1 Academic Writing Support
Did you know that you can book a tutorial to improve your academic writing skills with a professional writer?
Exeter Law School has the privilege of hosting a Royal Literary Fund (RLF) Fellow. Christopher Wakling is a professional writer and editor, whose role is to help students improve their academic writing skills.
Christopher offers one-to-one academic writing tutorials in person and online. Sessions last up to 50 minutes, are free and confidential. You can focus on any aspects of your written communication.

Spotlight on Equality, Diversity & Inclusion
Hello from David Barrett:
I am one of the two Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Officers for the Law School (Dr Annika Jones being the other officer). I am focusing on EDI from the perspective of students. I have been meeting with student EDI representatives ahead of the start of term to start gathering information on EDI. Together we can develop actions to improve EDI in the Law School. I wanted to highlight two things raised by students so far.
1. Preferred names
If you prefer to go by a name other than your legal name it is possible to check and update your preferred name using this link (n.b. you will need to enter your university username and password). Your preferred name will then appear on registers and be used by tutors in the Law School.
2. Pronouns
The University encourages everyone to add their pronouns to their email signature. This is to ensure that all individuals are correctly identified. Guidance on pronouns and how to add them to outlook can be found here and how to update your signature to include pronouns can be found here.

Our Centenary!
The commemoration of our Centenary continues through this term as we head towards our anniversary in December. We have a range of events planned, involving students and our alumni. You can find out about The Law School's history and meet our alumni on our Law100 webpages.

Mooting Opportunities
The Law School is pleased to announce a school-wide negotiation competition to take place this term. This competition will be open to all undergraduate and post-graduate taught students. The first round of the competition will take place at the beginning of Week 6 (w/c 30th October).
Need to know Info:
- You will need to be in teams of 2 students.
- Each team will compete against another team in a scenario-based negotiation.
- Teams in the competition will be scored on planning, teamwork, rapport building, information gathering, bargaining, ethics, self-analysis and the outcome of the scenario.
- Teams will be marked according to a scoring matrix.
- The four highest scoring teams from the first round will progress to the final.
- The winners and second-place team will then be eligible to go on and represent the University and Law School at CEDR National Student Negotiation Competition 2024.
- Register your pairing by 5pm 13 October on mooting@exeter.ac.uk
ELSA HELGA PEDERSEN MOOT COURT COMPETITION
The Law School will, this year, be sending a team of students to this competition. We are looking for an additional three students to make up the team.
The competition has a human rights focus, with a written round, regional oral rounds in the UK, and then a final taking place in Strasbourg at the European Court of Human Rights and the Council of Europe. More information about the competition can be found here https://helgapedersenmoot.elsa.org
If you are interested in participating please email the Mooting Inbox with your expression of interest. In accordance with the Competitions Policy, please include in your email details of any previous external competitions where you have represented the Law School. Please note that expressions of interest must be submitted by close of business on 16 October 2023.
Landmark Chambers Judicial Review Moot Competition
We will be sending a team of two final-year students to this event this year. To express an interest in being considered send an email via the Mooting Inbox. In accordance with the Competitions Policy, please include details of any previous external competitions where you have represented the Law School. Please note that expressions of interest must be submitted by close of business on 05 October 2023. More detail on the button below.
Canadian Law Students:
Career Development Opportunities
Together with the Canadian Law Society, the Law School is organising a three day in-person programme from Monday 30 October to Wednesday 1 November.
It will be facilitated by Rachel Gaunt(Employability) and alumnus Justin Kanji who currently works for Osler, Hoskin and Harcourt but was previously employed by Ropes & Gray in London. To sign up visit the events on Handshake.

Your Wellbeing: Getting Advice and Support
A reminder that our Wellbeing team are here to support you throughout your time at Exeter.
For everyday queries about student life and your studies, the team at one of our Hubs/Info points can help you. Full details of all of the ones on campus are here.
If you would like to reach out for more personal support, or guidance for a friend our wellbeing pages have all the information you might need. There is also a live chat facility 2-4pm weekdays.
Individual Learning Plans
Do you need an Individual Learning Plan to support you through your University studies?
An ILP informs us of recommended reasonable adjustments that we can put in place for students with a health condition or disability.
