The use of AI in Postgraduate Research- Statement from Professor Andrew McRae, Dean of Postgraduate Research and the Doctoral College

The Doctoral College recognizes that the use of generative AI tools by our PGRs is a sensitive area that is raising questions from students and supervisors alike. Late in the last academic year we reviewed the position adopted at Exeter for taught students. This recognizes that AI tools have potential benefits for students, but formulates a principle that any use of it must always be acknowledged by students. Since the Russell Group recently reached a similar position, it is likely that this will become standard across the sector.

Please note that the definition of plagiarism, in the TQA manual section on research misconduct, has been revised to acknowledge the benefits and risks of AI. It now encompasses: 'Direct copying of text or illustrations from a webpage, book, article, thesis, handout, fellow student's work, web-page, AI-generated content or other source without proper acknowledgement' (Ch. 13 2.3.3).

We appreciate that this is a rapidly changing field, and that students will welcome further guidance. Training materials are presently in development, for launch in the new year. Please note also that the University Library has published referencing guidance for the use of generative AI tools.

GW4 Open Research Week: 20-24 November 2023

The GW4 Alliance, an alliance of four of the UK’s most research-intensive and innovative universities: Bath, Bristol, Cardiff and Exeter, is hosting the inaugural GW4 Open Research Week for 2023.

The week will take place from 20 - 24 November 2023, and focuses on the theme of the Theory of Change, showcasing a broad range of open research practices which make research more accessible, transparent, reproducible and visible.

Highlight for the GW4 Open Research Prize, submissions from all internal researchers (including postgraduate research students) in all disciplines across the four Alliance universities are now open.

Prizes of £250 will be awarded for the best submissions across four categories: Improving Quality; Widening Reach; Poster Session and Early Career Researcher (ECR) Monograph Prize.

Join in the Climate Change Conversation

Welcome to our interactive Climate Wall coming to Exeter and Cornwall: 13 November - 1 December. Post a message, answer a question, tell us how you’re feeling.  The aim? To encourage reflection around the climate crisis and create a record of how people feel leading up to COP 28.

How does it work?

In person
• The projector will pick up on your movement and words will ‘dance’
• Lock onto a word and push it up the wall
• At the top it will ‘unlock’; start again with another
• Link words; create a sentence.
• More than one person using the wall? Work as a team
• Have fun! Experiment.

Via your mobile phone
• Scan the QR code on the Wall and follow online instructions.

To celebrate the launch enjoy veg/vegan pizza at St Luke's (Mon 13 November) or Streatham (Mon 20 November) or Penryn (Monday 27 November) from 5pm. Reserve your FREE place via Eventbrite.

UniChat Online Forum

UniChat is an online chat forum targeted at students turning 30 or over this year. It’s a student-designed project, with support from the University and the Guild, aiming to help older students find each other for mutual support and socialising. Students at Exeter and Cornwall campuses, as well as distance learners, are all welcome to join us.

We have over 100 students now registered, and held a very successful campus meet-up last week. In response to feedback, we’ll be setting up a WhatsApp group via the UniChat forum, too.

Come and have a look at what’s new, or register to join, via this link.
