Summer is here - and it's OrangeWith Christmas fast approaching, it's good to be at the Orange traffic light setting in the COVID-19 Protection Framework. This gives double-vaccinated people the opportunity to enjoy an almost normal festive season, although masks, scanning in and showing vaccine passes is our new normal. Many public facilities, including libraries, recreation centres (including pools), galleries and service centres now require you to show your vaccine pass. The virus will soon be circulating throughout New Zealand, and we need to learn to live with it. The best way to do that is for as many people as possible to be vaccinated. It's not too late to get your jab. The Canterbury District Health Board has lots information about where to go, including information about the newly available AstraZeneca vaccine and Pfizer booster shots. The schedule of summer events has been confirmed. Vaccine passes will need to be shown at many of them. Read more about what's happening this summer Newsline . This will be our last newsletter for the year. We all wish you a very happy and safe festive season, and look forward to catching up in 2022. Highlights of 2021Despite the disruptions caused by COVID-19, this has been an exciting year for Waikura Linwood-Central-Heathcote, with great progress being made on some significant projects and initiatives. The Greening the East project is now completed and funding has been approved for the final stage of the Coastal Pathway, which will pass through Charlesworth Reserve. Te Pou Toetoe: Linwood PoolThis fabulous new indoor pool opened in October and more than 2000 people have passed through its doors every week since. The Wahine Wednesday initiative has been extremely popular, with women queueing to get in. Numbers were restricted to 100 people at a time during COVID-19 Alert Level 2, but entry is not restricted under the Orange traffic light setting - you'll just need to scan in and show your vaccine pass. Inner City East (ICE) Revitalisation ProjectThe Community Governance Team worked alongside the Inner City Revitalisation Working Group to create the Inner City East Linwood Revitalisation Plan. The Working Group will soon be calling for nominations for a leadership group to put the plan into action. Sustainability CharterThis charter, launched in November, shows this board's commitment to sustainability and gives effect to one of the priorities in our board plan. The launch was attended by the Waikura Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board and Governance Team, along with community groups the Canterbury Community Gardens Association, Richmond Community Garden, and Phillipstown Community Centre Charitable Trust. The Governance Team now has a sustainable community picnic set which can cater to up to 30 picnickers and is available to all our community groups to book out free of charge. Linwood Youth Festival Experience (LYFE) 2021This event was capped off with the 2021 LYFE Report, highlighting how young people see the Linwood area. The report captured the voices of more than 500 rangitahi who shared their insights, ideas and experiences. This gave the project a great bank of information and set out a strong youth voice as we plan for LYFE 2022. The project was possible thanks to the work of several community organisations, including Christchurch Youth Council, Youth and Cultural Development, Gapfiller, 4YP, and Youthtown, along with Eastgate Shopping Centre and Linwood College. Woolston VillageWhat a difference an upgrade makes! Woolston Village and Ferry Road from Portman Street to St Anne's School now has a 'village' look and feel, sporting new trees and plants, new footpaths, new street furniture and parking for cars and bikes. Lancaster Park updateWork to turn Lancaster Park into a green recreational space and community sports fields started back in April, and it's been a year of great progress. All going well, the park will reopen on Anzac Day, 2022. Keep birds safe from dogsBirds are roosting in coastal and wetland areas of the district and there are chicks about. The slightest disturbance can scare them from their nests, so please keep your dog on a lead and away from these areas if you're out and about. We can all slow the spreadWe all need to work together if we want to slow the spread of COVID-19. Please be ready to show your vaccine pass if asked, wear your mask and remember to scan in.
