Rwanda is a small country with a large presence on the international stage. This reputation is largely due to its military. Rwanda is the world’s fourth-largest contributor of peacekeepers to UN missions and its military supports other national armies across the continent, including those in Mozambique and the Central African Republic. Federico Donelli explains how these interventions have helped Rwanda bolster its image at home and abroad.

Protests are a regular thing in Kenya. What’s unusual about the latest, which have erupted over the proposed new finance bill, is the national scale and the many young people driving them. What’s not changed is how the police have responded to the protests: with force. John Mukum Mbaku emphasises that Kenyans have a right to protest and unpacks the laws that protect this right.
