News from the College of Business, Government & Law
We acknowledge the traditional owners, both past and present, of the various locations Flinders University operates on, and recognise their continued relationship and responsibility to these lands and waters. We recognise that Flinders was established on the lands of the Kaurna nation, with the main Flinders campus located near Warriparinga.
Welcome to the first edition of the College of Business, Government and Law newsletter for 2023. In 2021 we defined the College mission: We embrace innovative knowledge and practice to tackle the challenges of our time, with a strategic focus on technology, health and social impact.
In 2022 we identified our strategic choices. At College level, we identified 5 priorities: (1) To increase our enrolments; (2) to build and apply our market intelligence; (3) to nurture a leadership mindset and team-of-teams culture; (4) to optimise the matrix structure of the University; and (5) to achieve research concentration and scale.
Our challenge in 2023 is to execute and advance these strategic choices. The creation of a new vertical campus at Festival Plaza will be pivotal to this process. As this month’s newsletter reports, the new campus is progressing rapidly, and we are now thinking carefully about course delivery, space configuration, points of difference, and support channels for the change process.
Other newsletter items include our new partnership with Port Adelaide Football Club, 12 new publications in top journals, and a spotlight on some of our more recent recruits in research and education.
I look forward to another year of working together to make the College a beacon for education and research in business, government, law and criminology.
Kind regards,
Michael Michael Gilding
Vice-President and Executive Dean

A step closer for Festival Plaza's Activation Project
Important progress on Flinders at Festival Plaza has taken place in the time since the last BGL newsletter. In great news, USF (University Strategic Fund) funding to support the Activation Project has been approved! It's a crucial step forward in bringing Flinders at Festival Plaza to life, this funding ensures that the activation phase of the project is resourced and adds to the momentum of what is an exciting project already.
Another step forward is the College Leadership roadshow commencing this month. Attendees will hear a building update, as well as learn about curriculum changes, points of difference, space configuration and the support channels for the change process.

The 'grandfather effect' impacts decisions of younger voters
A new Flinders study suggests that millennials trust older generations when it comes to politics. “Although older candidates with left-wing policies were preferred, this was often but not always necessarily the case with younger candidates,” says Associate Professor Rodrigo Praino.

Protected Writing Retreat In response to feedback received from over 55 academics during individual conversations with the Dean of Research, an inaugural Protected Writing Retreat was organised and held from the 5th to the 7th December 2022 at the Adelaide Hills Convention Centre in Hahndorf. Sixteen participants enjoyed the venue which provided several different writing spaces set in beautiful surrounds with spectacular views
of the hills.
One aim of the retreat was to provide opportunity for networking and establishing future collaborations. "I was able to learn a great deal regarding researchers I had never spoken to before," was the feedback from one attendees. "It was an excellent opportunity to think more broadly about potential themes and collaborations across the College.”

Political Geography
Luis da Vinha, senior lecturer in International Relations, published a chapter titled “Political Geography” in the Routledge Handbook of Foreign Policy Analysis Methods.
The chapter provides an overview of how Political Geography has engaged with foreign policy issues over time, detailing the historical relationship between political geography and foreign policy, as well as assessing the main conceptual and methodological issues contributing to the development of the discipline.
The chapter also offers an empirical example using geographical mental maps as an analytical concept to illustrate how Political Geography can contribute to improving our understanding of foreign policy decision-making.

Dr Sharif Rasel won a student-led teaching award! Congratulations to Sharif for winning a student-led teaching award (SLTA) for BGL.
The SLTAs are driven by the Flinders University Student Association (FUSA), who invited all students to nominate teaching staff in four categories: College Student-Led Teaching Award, TA that Saved the Day, Most Supportive Supervisor, and Best in FLO - before an all-student judging panel, chaired by the FUSA Education Officer.
The awards offer a way for students to recognise and raise the profile of teaching at Flinders University, while celebrating best practice.
"It is rare to find a teacher that is both knowledgeable and kind-hearted, but Sharif has exhibited this in all 3 classes I have taken of his. If I could complete the rest of my degree with only him as my teacher I would be thrilled," said Dr Sharif Rasel's nominator.
An honourable mention was given to Dr Quinn Nguyen ✨
An update on Canvas "As you will all be aware, the University is changing its LMS from Moodle to Canvas, and some early starters have already started teaching in Canvas in January. Many more of you will be among the early adopters starting in semester 1 this year. So, for this year FLO will have two hearts beating together side by side, Moodle and Canvas, until semester 1 2024 when Canvas will take over completely," writes Roger Howley.
Read on to learn about this important transition period and what will come next.
Professional Staff Spotlight:
Roger Howley Roger is playing a crucial role in the transition to Canvas - but where was he before Flinders? Here, he shares details about his move from running a technology start-up to diving into the higher-education sector.
