Politics EventThe Conservative Party: From Rout To Renewal? A Public SymposiumThursday 1 May 7.30pm The Conservative Party is Britain’s oldest political party and its most electorally successful organisation. Since its emergence in the 1830s, it has spent most of its time in government and has adapted to a range of social, economic and cultural shifts. Yet, at last year’s general election, the Party suffered an electoral rout. A record 251 Conservative seats were lost, including seats where, a few years earlier, Tory defeat would have been unthinkable (Macclesfield and Congleton being examples from our own region). As a result, the Party won just 121 seats, its smallest total ever, and just 3 of the 73 seats here in the North-West. Nationally, it polled just 24% of votes cast – again, its worst ever performance at a general election. Now in Opposition, Conservatives face some awkward questions. Why did they suffer such a cataclysmic defeat? Can they fully recover? Should they heed those who deserted them for Labour and the Lib Dems - or those now supporting Reform? What is the likely strategy of the Party’s new leader, Kemi Badenoch? And will she be allowed to pursue it? To help with these questions, we have assembled a panel that is both expert and experienced. Our constituency MP and former minister, Esther McVey, will be joined by Laura Evans, the Conservative candidate up against Andy Burnham in both the 2021 and 2024 GM Mayoral elections, an experienced politician, along with Jonathan Gullis, former Tory MP for Stoke-on-Trent North, and Liverpool University’s Dr David Jeffery, author of numerous publications concerning the Conservative Party. Chaired by our resident Politics tutor, Richard Kelly (co-author of MUP’s British Political Parties Today), the event will combine panel analysis with questions and comments from the audience. As such, the event promises not just the views of Conservative politicians, but a chance to participate in one of the key debates surrounding modern British politics. NB: A similar event, on the future of Britain’s centre-left, is planned later this year.

Guild Creative Writer Achieves Success! Anna Rains, a long standing member of the guild’s creative writing classes and enthusiastic supporter of all things literary at the guild, is excited to be embarking on her publishing career - at the age of 82. Anna has had a full and exciting life, and comes from a rather eccentric (her word!) family who gave her the inspiration for her first book, The Quirky Clan - a memoir of her amazing relatives. Now, she is full speed ahead with her fiction writing, with several novels already published, a selection of classic English ghost stories (on sale at the guild), and her new novel which hits the bookshops this month. As Anna would be the first to say, she is having the best time, and wants a strong message to go out to anyone who wants to give creative writing a go: ‘If I can do anything it would be to show other writers that it doesn't matter how old or young you are, everything is possible. It’s hard work, but it is amazing to touch your book for the first time. Whether I sell a lot of books or not doesn't matter - just doing it is so important.’ Anna’s writing tutor at the guild, Gill Rossini, agrees: ‘ Anna is the perfect example of what can be achieved; she has worked so very hard and had great success, but is still an attentive student and supports her writing colleagues magnificently. We are all very proud of her!’ Anna’s latest book, In the Wake of Betrayal, is a fast paced thriller centred around a kidnap. Play detective and see if you can work out who commits the crime, and why!
