Brands off our kids!

The Obesity Policy Coalition recently released the Brands off our kids! campaign.

The campaign and report highlight that every child should be able to play, learn and live in a world that supports and promotes their health and wellbeing.

"Right now, the processed food industry spends millions of dollars every year targeting Australian children with marketing for unhealthy food in every aspect of their lives. But as big food companies make more and more profit as a result, it is our children’s health that is at risk, now and into the future.

Our community expects governments to put the health of children before corporate profits. That includes setting higher standards to protect children from the processed food industry’s unhealthy food marketing. The need and support for urgent government action is clear."

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Resources

The Health Equity and Access Unit at Metro South Health have recently put together a range of resources.

Their Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nutrition team recently published a collection of tasty, fast and budget-friendly recipes to suit all cooking levels, using minimal equipment.

Each recipe is costed based on the total amount to buy all ingredients from major supermarkets, helping households decide if this fits into their budget. It will cost even less if you have ingredients at home already!

Recipe Idea

Corn Fritters

Ingredients
420g can corn kernels (drained)
4 spring onions, finely sliced
1/4 cup fresh herbs (e.g. coriander, parsley), finely chopped
Freshly cracked pepper, to season
2 eggs, beaten
1/2 cup milk
1 cup self-raising flour
Extra virgin olive oil

 

Method
1. Combine the drained corn kernels, finely sliced spring onions, finely chopped fresh herbs, cracked pepper, beaten eggs and milk in a large mixing bowl.
2. Stir in the self-raising flour until combined.
3. Heat a little extra virgin olive oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat.
4. Using approximately 1/4 cup of batter for each fritter, add to the pan. Cook for 2 - 3 minutes on each side or until both sides are golden brown and the fritter is cooked through. 
5. Repeat with the remaining batter until all fritters are cooked. Enjoy!

Serves 4. Makes 8 fritters.

Tuckshop Menu Planning ECHO Series

Could your school tuckshop menu improve? Are you unsure where to start or how to gain community support? Participate in ‘What’s for Lunch? A FREE tuckshop menu planning ECHO series’! This online series is designed for tuckshop representatives and will run fortnightly in Term 2, with 5 sessions held on Tuesdays from 2-3pm. Increase your knowledge and skills in planning a tuckshop menu and be part of a virtual community for support and guidance. 

This series is developed by the Queensland Association of School Tuckshops in partnership with Health and Wellbeing Queensland and experienced tuckshop convenors.

Boost your Healthy

The Boost your Healthy digital hub has been developed by Health and Wellbeing Queensland to provide support, inspiration and ideas to help Queenslanders stay healthy and active during COVID-19.

It features content from a wide range of Health and Wellbeing Queensland Alliance Partners who have played a valuable role in supporting the creation of the site. It also offers a platform for people to showcase how they are staying healthy through #BoostCampQld, and the Big Boost will feature a series of challenges to motivate and encourage people to stay healthy at this difficult time.

KRANK Teens School Holiday Cooking Workshop

NAQ Nutrition hosts cooking workshops as part of the Logan City Council’s KRANK Teens School Holiday program. These cooking workshops are open to people living in the Logan City Council area, aged 12 - 17 years, and are $3 per participant. GOLD Cooking Workshop

NAQ Nutrition hosts cooking workshops as part of the Brisbane City Council's GOLD (Growing Older and Living Dangerously) program. The program is for people living in the Brisbane City Council area, aged 50 years and over, and are $5 per participant. The workshops are an excellent opportunity to add skills to your cooking repertoire in a relaxed and social environment. People with all levels of cooking skills are welcome, as the workshops are a chance to develop new skills and confidence. Check out the following GOLD session coming up this month:

First Foods for Infants Nutrition Education Session

NAQ Nutrition hosts nutrition education sessions as part of Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Healthy and Active program. These sessions are open to people living in the Moreton Bay Regional Council area. Check out the following session coming up this month:

First Foods for Infants
Thursday 29th April 10am - 11:30am
Strathpine Library - 1 Station Street, Strathpine
This free casual information session will provide information for families and carers on feeding their infants including first foods. Workshops will discuss the importance of infants and children experiencing food texture appropriate to their age and stage of development which will assist a child’s speech development, oral health and motor skill development. Sessions will also include practical tips on how to make food for infants. Click here for more information and to register.

 

Food Safety Supervisor Course

Through COVID-19 we continue to offer food safety supervisor courses. Our courses include industry specific content and are designed with the needs of our students in mind. Our Food Safety Supervisor course:

  • Meets the requirements of nationally recognised training
  • Prepares food safety supervisors to supervise and oversee day to day operations and to prevent and recognise food safety hazards
  • Early years and aged care courses are specifically designed for those working with vulnerable populations

We provide opportunities for students to complete the course and all assessment in one day at face-to-face training.
