National anthems come with historical baggage and former British colonies like South Africa and India both adopted new anthems to mark independence and democracy. These are still being reinterpreted by a new generation. Music researcher Gwen Ansell speaks to two composers – Philip Miller and Amit Chaudhuri – about how they have reimagined their national anthems to shed the baggage or comment on the world today.
Food is a fundamental part of our daily lives. But it can also be the source of a wide range of health problems, from a spot of tummy trouble to organ failure and even death. One in ten of us will fall sick with a food-borne illness this year. One of the biggest reasons for this will be poor food handling in our kitchens at home or when we eat out. Antonina Mutoro explains what we can do to lower the risk of disease.
The diplomatic storm between South Africa and the US over an alleged armaments sale to Russia has rattled markets, and left the two sides scrambling to retrieve a modicum of calm. But it’s not proving easy. The debacle was triggered by Washington’s ambassador to South Africa alleging that ammunition and arms had been loaded on to a ship docked in Cape Town and bound for Russia. Criminologist Guy Lamb is sceptical about the allegation. He argues that a number of highly improbable events would have had to take place for the sale to have happened, but that, in the end, only the US’s intelligence reports can settle the matter. These need to be
declassified.
