ARTS NEWSLETTER JUNE 2011

Kia ora,
Once again our hearts go out to Christchurch and her people. How utterly horrible for the earth to shake so violently and again test people’s already frayed nerves, as well as their tolerance and strength to go on. However, I know New Zealanders are strong and one day I look forward to seeing a beautiful, safer city emerge from all the rubble and devastation.
On a lighter note I am very happy to announce that we now have the Central Otago Art Awards page up and running on our website. Here you can find out all the information you’ll need to know about entering our prestigious new event.
Artists have until Tuesday 9 August to create a wonderful piece for entry. Its okay to enter something you have already completed but it must be no more than two years old; must never have been a prize winner and must not have been exhibited before in Otago or Southland. Please make sure you enter your very best work because each entry will go through a selection process. Entries are $20 each, with a maximum of two entries per person. I have already told you about our great Judges and I am now thrilled to confirm that we have the support of some fantastic groups, trusts and businesses.
- Central Lakes Trust is our highest-level supporter. They will present the esteemed art excellence award winner with the grand sum of $5,000
- The Central Otago News is sponsoring the Central Otago Artist award of $2,000
- Alexandra Community Arts are sponsoring the Viewers’ Choice award of $1,000
- Our silver level sponsors at this stage are: Southernwide Real Estate, Quartz Reef Winery and Three Miners Vineyard and we are still hopeful of others joining us soon.
It is very encouraging to gain your support and we thank you for helping us make this new event a sizzling success. We have also received funding from the Vincent Community Board, for which we are also most grateful. All members of the community are invited to join us at the VIP Art Awards Opening Night on Thursday 8, September where the winners will be announced. Plans are well underway for a memorable opening night with local wine, fine food and a variety of colourful entertainment. Tickets are $30 per person and it would be wise to get your ticket early, as numbers will be limited. They will go on sale Monday 4 July.

June and July are fairly quiet months on the events calendar but there still a few things of interest happening. The Opera Otago on Tour - The Perils of Strong Women, these two comedy light operas feature leading Otago singers, Clare Barton, Emma Fraser, Michelle Willyams, Andreas Hirt and Julien van Mallaerts, with pianist Julia Horsnell. You can catch this at Cromwell Memorial Hall, Sunday 26 June 2011 at 1.30pm. Take care and stay warm!
