Congratulations to Georgia Bourlotos who was awarded a PhD Scholarship ($9,641) to study the bladder microbiome's role in BCG-immunotherapy and He Lin who received a PhD Scholarship ($10,000) for work on brain cancer-specific circular RNA as therapeutic targets.

 

On February 4th (World Cancer Day), epidemiological and behavioural cancer research from Flinders University was presented at the inaugural Cancer Council SA Research Symposium. Congratulations to all of our speakers, with Alicia Dallisson (honours student) receiving the award for Best Short Presentation, and Maddison Dix (PhD candidate) winning the Audience Choice Award (both from the Bowel Health Service team).

 

HDR student Alvin Lee recently attended the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease (AASLD) Meeting in San Diego, one of the world’s leading hepatology conferences. He presented his research on a primary-care-led model for managing compensated liver cirrhosis, highlighting the role of Hepatology Nurse Consultants in improving patient care.

Exams Graduation Deadline for April Ceremony

The April graduation ceremonies will be held at the Adelaide Convention Centre between Tuesday 15 and Thursday 17 April. Details of specific college/course ceremony date and times for the ceremonies will be advertised in early February and will be available here. All eligible graduates will be emailed details about how to book in March 2024. If you are currently undertaking your amendments and want to attend the April ceremony please ensure they are submitted by Friday 8 March.

Women's Study Room

Emma Kerr, a CSE PhD Student would like to share news about a new Women's Study Room that is open at Tonsley, Mondays 11am-12pm in room 4.16. The space is open to all female identifying students to drop in for a study session or chat with fellow students.

 

Graduate Women SA Trust Scholarships

Applications are now open for the Graduate Women SA Trust Scholarships, supporting postgraduate students in South Australia.

  • Doctoral Scholarship: (4 x $6,000). Open to women pursuing a PhD or professional doctorate, having completed 18 months of study by March 2025.
  • Masters Scholarship:  (2 x $3,000). Open to women pursuing a Master's by research or with a thesis component, having completed six months of study by March 2025.

Statistical Consulting

Did you know that the University employs a full-time statistical consultant to help staff and HDR students by:

  • Providing statistical one-to-one consultations and assistance in areas of their research that requires the use of statistical methods.
  • Conducting statistically orientated workshops
  • Helping to apply for restricted access data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), Department of Social Services (DSS) and Eurostat
  • Providing technical support for the IBM SPSS and NVivo licences as well as looking after a stand-alone PC with Specialised Statistical Software

HDR Student Induction 2025

All new students are required to complete the HDR Online Induction course in FLO within two months of their candidate. The 2025 Online Induction has been updated and can be accessed at https://canvas.flinders.edu.au/enroll/EF8ND4.

New students should also register to attend the online HDR Induction Seminar held on Wednesday 2 April 2025 (10.30am-12.30am SA time) where you will hear from the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research Training and Capabilities) and Dean of Graduate Research, Professor Tim Cavagnaro and the OGR team about your candidature requirements and process. You will then hear from a panel of existing and past HDR students about the experiences of a HDR at Flinders.
