In Case You Missed It

  • Faculty Mentorship/Student Help: The Division of Research has an established process for matching research residents and medical students with faculty members for research opportunities. These opportunities are to be strictly for volunteer work done by the student. Specifics on task work is completely up to the faculty member’s discretion. If you are interested in mentoring, please fill out this Qualtrics survey.
  • NIH Scientific Data Sharing Website: Whether you are involved in an NIH-funded project and want to understand which sharing policies apply to your research and how to comply, or you are a researcher looking to access scientific data from NIH-affiliated repositories, this site is for you. | More information
  • Department of Surgery Intranet Site: Funding Opportunities, Cultural Complications/Grand Rounds/Quality Minute presentations, Surgery Sparks of Gratitude, Global Surgical Programs, Finance/Reimbursement links, DOS Phone list, and resources for logos/fonts/templates. | More Information

Methods in Grant Preparation – Spring 2026

Are you or will you be writing one or more grant proposals? Do you want to learn how to identify funding opportunities, write a successful NIH grant, or about the NIH review process? The purpose and goal of Methods in Grant Preparation is to present advanced principles of National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant preparation, and it can be taken for a certificate.

*This is a virtual Zoom seminar in 2026*

  • Registration period: November 1, 2025 – December 22, 2025
  • Seminar series begins: Wednesdays 5-7pm, starting January 7, 2026
  • Seminar series ends: Wednesday, April 22, 2026

Seminar Series and Course Description: This series addresses how to succinctly state overall and specific hypotheses and specific aims with affirmation and relevance. It also suggests specific writing styles with the intent of clearly stating the importance of the specific aims and bringing them to fruition. The series is recommended for faculty, staff, and other individuals who are currently or will be working on one or more grant proposals.

**Please reach out to Angie Holtz, CTSI, with any questions!**

Clinical Research Tip of the Month

Clinical Research Data Warehouse + EMERSE

The Clinical Research Data Warehouse (CRDW) is a powerful resource available to investigators across the Department of Surgery. Managed by the Center for Biomedical Informatics and the CTSI, the CRDW integrates data from Froedtert Health and Children’s Wisconsin electronic health records, billing, laboratory, and other clinical systems. Researchers can use self-service tools like i2b2 and TriNetX to explore de-identified patient cohorts, assess feasibility, and quickly generate data to support grant applications, study design, or quality improvement initiatives. Identified data is also available through an Honest Broker process with appropriate IRB approval.

A newly available tool, EMERSE (Electronic Medical Record Search Engine), expands these capabilities by allowing users to search clinical free-text notes—a source of rich clinical detail often missed by structured data. EMERSE can help identify cases based on keywords or phrases, support manual abstraction workflows, and uncover patients who meet study criteria but lack corresponding ICD or procedure codes.

Together, CRDW and EMERSE strengthen retrospective research, cohort discovery, and real-world data studies. To get started, visit the CRDW website via CTSI or contact the CBMI team for access and training.
