Announcing the Second EAS AI Bootcamp: Transformers

After the successful completion of our first AI Bootcamp in October, we are happy to announce that the second AI bootcamp will take place from January 2 to January 5, 2024. This bootcamp will cover transformers, a set of concepts and tools that have influenced many different branches of AI, including NLP, Vision, and Reinforcement Learning. As before, this course is designed for Caltech graduate students, postdocs, and researchers, and aims to accelerate their research productivity through the practical applications of transformers in AI. Deadline for registration: December 28th, 2023. Learn more about registration and enrollment.

Spotlight On Our People

Elham Davoodi

Elham Davoodi

Postdoctoral Scholar, Andrew and Peggy Cherng Department of Medical Engineering

I am a third-year postdoc in the Gao Lab within the Department of Medical Engineering at Caltech. My research focuses on additive manufacturing, also known as three-dimensional (3D) printing, with a specific emphasis on healthcare applications. With a background in 3D printing of various polymers, ceramics, and metals, my primary interest lies in advancing technologies that benefit human health. I am currently working on developing minimally invasive 3D printing technologies, enabling the creation of functional biostructures without direct access to the target location. These cutting-edge techniques hold tremendous potential for various therapeutics. I am enthusiastic about exploring novel modifications to existing 3D printing technologies to unlock further practical applications in the healthcare domain. Beyond my research pursuits, I find joy in practicing the violin, hiking, and painting.

Postdoctoral Scholar, Computing and Mathematical Sciences

I am a postdoctoral scholar working with Professor Anima Anandkumar. I received my PhD from the Department of Computer Science at Princeton University, advised by Professor Jia Deng. My research focuses on Neurosymbolic AI, which aims to make machine learning capable of symbolic reasoning. I have approached the goal from two angles: (1) applying machine learning to symbolic reasoning tasks, such as mathematical reasoning and theorem proving in formal logic or natural language; (2) introducing symbolic components into machine learning models to make them more interpretable, verifiable, and data efficient. Currently, I'm working on AI that can understand and reason about mathematics. Mathematical reasoning is a critical milestone toward human-level intelligence, and it can potentially transform many important problems in science and engineering, such as solving PDEs and formal verification. My research is recognized with a Siebel Scholar award.

We'd like to feature you!

The Bill Gross Prize for Entrepreneurship

The Bill Gross Prize for Entrepreneurship awards prizes for undergraduate or graduate students who submit a business plan to launch a product, process, or a novel use for an existing technology. Students may apply as individuals or as members of a team. At the end of the mentorship period, each individual or team will present their business plan before a panel of volunteer judges from across the entrepreneurship community. Winning teams will split $100,000 and be considered for internships with Caltech-associated startups. Learn more and apply. Submission deadline: January 8, 2024.

RSI Ideation Grants - Call for Proposals

These grants are intended to fund scientists and engineers interested in translating their ideas and technologies into wider world impact, and potentially creating new ventures. These grants serve the Resnick Sustainability Institute's mission to advance global sustainability by addressing challenges and opportunities associated with climate change and the stewardship of natural resources. Ideation funding supports conceptualizing technology development, from early idea to kickstarting a business. Expenditure categories include; techno-economic/carbon lifecycle analysis; shared workspace & tech facility fees; industry visits & conferences; small equipment, materials & supplies; and business information. Rolling applications accepted through December 31, 2023. Learn more and apply.

2024 RSI Pioneer Postdoctoral Fellowship

The Resnick Sustainability Institute's (RSI) Pioneer Postdoctoral Fellowship recruits outstanding recent PhD graduates to pursue research and training in exciting areas relevant to sustainability at Caltech. This fellowship will afford researchers access to cutting edge facilities, training, and broad expertise in the science and engineering needed to tackle pressing challenges in sustainability. RSI anticipates making up to 3 awards and welcomes applicants with exceptional backgrounds in research and who are committed to diversity and creating an inclusive, equitable culture. Candidates must secure a commitment from one or more Caltech faculty members to serve as a mentor and to provide office/lab space for the fellowship. Mentors will be expected to provide a 50% cost-share for the fellowship. Application deadline: Friday, January 12, 2024. Learn more and apply.
