What's On in the Arts in Central Otago - April

New Book on Eden Hore Couture Collection A new publication Central Otago Couture: The Eden Hore Collection is set to showcase Eden Hore and his extraordinary fashion collection. Authored by Jane Malthus and Claire Regnault and published by Te Papa Press, this book provides an in-depth exploration of a fascinating fashion archive that merges high style with rich history. Featuring photography by Derek Henderson, the book visually narrates the intriguing story of Eden Hore, a passionate farmer from Māniatoto with a love for haute couture. The images not only capture the elegance of the garments but also reflect the unique blend of rural life in Central Otago and high fashion. Signed copies will
be available during special book signing events on April 3, 2025, at Paper Plus in Alexandra and Lohi in Ranfurly. New Zealand Pastel Artists Exhibition Pastel Artists of New Zealand will hold their annual national exhibition at Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery in Alexandra, from Saturday 5th April to Sunday 4th May. Every year, their flagship exhibition is held
in turn in the North or South Island. This initiative spreads their paintings throughout areas which might not have the opportunity to view such a range of subjects and different application of this historic medium. Pastel Artists of New Zealand (PANZ) was formed in 2002 in Blenheim, along the lines of similar groups in the USA and Australia. Pastel artists from all over New Zealand belong to their growing membership, with tutors available for workshops, including Patearoa artist and New Zealand Master Pastelist Julie Greig, who regularly teaches her pastel painting techniques at the Māniatoto Arts Centre in Ranfurly. With assistance from the PANZ Committee, Julie has been working on the organisation of this exhibition and accompanying convention for over a year, encouraging pastel artists from all over New Zealand to visit stunning Alexandra and the wider area in autumn. PANZ are bringing Australian Master Pastelist Tricia Taylor over to teach her Autumn Glory Workshop prior to the Convention. Tricia is one of
the judges of the exhibition, along with artists Neil Driver of Clyde, and Nicola Bennett of Alexandra. Invercargill Distinguished Pastelist and PANZ President Lyn Henry will run her workshop "Playtime Sketchbooks". Speakers for the Convention include Nicola Bennett and Janyne Fletcher, Multi Award winning photographer of Ranfurly, with Grahame Sydney as guest speaker at their Saturday evening dinner. Oturehua Art Exhibition Mark your calendars! From June 19 to 22, 2025, an exhibition featuring works by regional artists will take place at the Oturehua Town Hall. The exhibition will showcase pieces by Tony Stanford Shields (landscape paintings), Birgit Krippner (photography), Debbie Moore (pastel landscapes), Martin Sullivan (sculpture), and Ruth Arnott (ceramics). This event provides a great opportunity for a winter drive to Oturehua.
The opening night will be held on June 19, and the closing event on June 22 will include the announcement of the recipient of the People's Choice Award, which comes with a $2,000 prize. Entry to the exhibition will be by koha (donation), with all funds raised donated to the hall. The aim is to showcase local artists and utilise the town hall as a community space. Enjoy What's On in Central Otago this month!
