Greetings from your Community BoardMessage from the ChairKia ora koutou, The end of 2021 is almost here and I think we are all looking forward to having some time off to recharge our batteries. Living in a world affected by a global pandemic for a second year has been challenging and I want to acknowledge all the hard work that has been put in by the many community groups we work with. I have been inspired by your commitment to keep helping our community despite the uncertainties you are facing because of COVID-19. The board enjoyed recognising these amazing efforts at the start of December at our community network Christmas lunch held at the Village Community Centre in Bryndwr. Thanks again for all you’ve done during a really tough year. Board Chair, Bridget Williams With the introduction of the government’s Covid Protection Framework there is a lot we will be able to enjoy this summer. It is great to see community events like Culture Galore being planned to go ahead in February, providing we remain in traffic light orange, while Sparks is also on the calendar for 22 January 2022. Enjoy the festive season with your family and loved ones and I look forward to working with you all again in the New Year. Community updatesSpirit of Adventure trip of a lifetimeA group of Burnside High School students took to the sea last month to compete for the coveted Spirit of Adventure Trophy. Lucy Cox, Hamish Fletcher, Daniel Howie, Sam Lidstone, Megan McMorran, Xenia Prinz, Roman Reid and Hannah Wood all participated in the voyage in Tauranga, from 9 to 14 November 2021. Schools from around the country send teams of Year 10 students to compete against each other for the bragging rights of winning the Spirit trophy. The experience guarantees challenge, adventure, creativity and reward. Burnside High School Spirit of Adventure Coordinator Chris Risbridger says taking part in the voyage brings a lot of benefits for students, including developing leadership skills, confidence and teamwork. “Students love the challenges, being out on the sea and seeing different parts of the country. They enjoy meeting new people and making friends. Spending five days separated from their phones doesn't hurt either.” Activities in the programme include ship-handling, teamwork, problem-solving, debating, and water sports (in and on the water). Teams also go ashore and complete tasks against each other and enjoy competitive games that involve ingenuity, leadership and fun. There are typically between five and nine Spirit Trophy Voyages per year (dependent on the sailing schedule). The Waimāero Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board helped cover costs for the eight students to attend the voyage, approving a $1200 grant from its 2021-2022 Youth Development Fund in November. Splash into Jellie ParkKeep your kids entertained this summer at Jellie Park Recreation and Sports Centre. The popular facility’s outdoor pools and hydroslides are now open with many families already making the most of the fun. Under COVID-19 traffic light setting Orange, safety measures are in place and spaces are limited so to secure your spot and avoid disappointment, check the capacity status of the outdoor pools online. The outdoor pools will host pool parties over the summer too, so keep an eye on our website for party details. Opening hours are from 5.30am until 8pm on weekdays and from 7am until 8pm on Saturdays and Sundays. (Note: hours will be adjusted over Christmas/New Year.) Casual entry is $6.60 per adult and $3.80 per child. Burnside Park - making fitness accessiblePull on your training shoes and limber up – now’s the time to tackle the Burnside Park Fitness Trail. Funded by the local community and the Waimāero Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board, the trail features four fitness stations sited on the park perimeter, including a sit-up bench, push-up bars, stairs, a vertical ladder, a chin-up bar, shoulder wheel, cross trainer, shoulder press and much more. Designed for all fitness levels, the popular trail provides multiple options to improve your overall fitness, health and wellbeing, while making the most of one of the area’s most popular parks. Find out where other fitness trails are located in the city. Put Culture Galore on the calendarMulti-cultural festival Culture Galore will go ahead in line with the Covid-19 Protection Framework protocols on Saturday 19 February 2022, from noon to 4pm, at Ray Blank Park. This free event – jointly funded by the Waimāero Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood and Waipuna Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Boards – is a great opportunity for the people of Christchurch to experience and celebrate the diversity of cultures that exists in our community. Ethnic groups will showcase their culture through performing arts, ethnic food, crafts, demonstrations, sports, games and language. Enjoy Christchurch's hidden gem - Roto Kohatu ReserveAt their December meeting, the Community Board approved the Roto Kohatu Reserve Management Plan to go out for community consultation. Roto Kohatu Reserve, located in in the Sawyers Arms Reserve near Harewood, is made up of two freshwater lakes, Tahi and Rua. It is a popular place for a range of outdoor activities such as walking, swimming and water sports. The vision for Roto Kohatu is for the reserve to be “developed and managed as an aquatic playground for a wide range of organised and informal water-based recreation and sport activities while supporting the biodiversity and amenity values of the area”. This Plan provides direction for the future management and development of Roto Kohatu Reserve. Public will have the opportunity to share their views on the Plan from late January to late March 2022. Keep an eye out on our Have Your Say page and make sure to check out the reserve over summer. Summer events programme Sparks excitementCrowd favourite Sparks will kick-off a new line-up of summer events in Christchurch, with our summer events programme firmed up following the release of information about the Covid-19 Protection Framework by the Government. The first big event is musical extravaganza Sparks, on Saturday 22 January 2022, in North Hagley Park, with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra finalising the songs it will play before a dazzling 10-minute fireworks display to end the night’s entertainment. Next on the calendar is the Summer Sundays series, formerly Lazy Sundays, which will feature free live music on the Archery Lawn in the Botanic gardens from 30 January until 6 March 2022. Following the cancellation last month of New Year’s Eve celebrations and Kite Day, two new events in Victoria Square have been added to the calendar, specifically for families and young people. Summer Nights, a concert at dusk featuring popular local artists in a carnival setting, will run from 6pm-10pm on Saturday 12 March. The following day, Sunday 13 March, Family Festival will see a free day of fun and activity for the whole family held in Victoria Square.
