Stand Like Stone Foundation

Inspiring community kindness and courage

Newsletter - August 2022

Message from our CEO

Hello everyone and welcome to our August 2022 newsletter.

As we start off the new financial year, it provides us with an opportunity to look back at the last few months and take time out to consider what the Foundation has been involved with during this time. As I touched on in our last newsletter, I’m constantly amazed at how our community is always there to support and assist Stand Like Stone with its endeavors. For example, the 2022 Swinging with the Stars event held at The Barn in June was once again a resounding success. With over 500 attending the gala night in support of our 8 unbelievable Stars, it’s a testament to the community spirit and courage that is prevalent across this fantastic region.

Additionally, the opportunity to work closely with OneFortyOne to roll out another round of community grants for the Limestone Coast has given me a greater appreciation for just how much behind-the-scenes community support OneFortyOne provides in this region. So, a big congrats to Paul Hartung and his team for their ongoing support of our community, with years’ grants pushing the total funds provided by OneFortyOne to well over $300,000 since our partnership commenced back in 2014.

On a sadder note, we need to take this opportunity to acknowledge the recent passing of our great friend, supporter and Patron, Brian Page.  Brian has been a key part of Stand Like Stone journey since the very beginning, and will be sadly missed by all. Our thoughts are also with Sue Page during this difficult time. Vale Brian.

…..and remember, life is mostly froth and bubble, two things stand like stone, kindness in another’s trouble, courage in your own.

Stand Like Stone & OneFortyOne

Grants 2022

OneFortyOne and Stand Like Stone have granted $50,000 to 3 community groups from across the Limestone Coast, to support local projects.

We’d like to thank everyone who applied for a grant and congratulate the following successful recipients.

2022 Successful Grant Recipients:

  • Mil-Lel Memorial Park Inc.: $10,000 to complete the Mel-Lel Hall Kitchen Upgrades. This project will ensure the facility meets all food safe requirements and is able to cater to the ever growing demand by the local community to access the hall’s facilities.
  •  Australian Schools Plus: $20,000 to support the expansion of a proactive social work model at three Mount Gambier schools. This project will focus on addressing increasing levels of absenteeism, through supporting families to engage with a range of external services and the wider school community.
  • Youth Opportunities: $20,000 to assist over 50 young people from public sector schools in Mount Gambier, Penola and Naracoorte to participate in a program to develop confidence, resilience, optimism and goal-setting for their future.

OneFortyOne Jubilee Sawmill General Manager Paul Hartung said it was great to work with Stand Like Stone again this year.

“We were pleased to receive many great applications, which just goes to show how many passionate people live in the Limestone Coast.,” Paul said.

“The applications go through a rigorous review process. This way we ensure we are funding projects that meet our objectives, which includes projects which will have an ongoing and positive impact. This year we sponsored projects that focus on youth education and opportunity which very much speaks to supporting a better tomorrow.”

OneFortyOne also contributed a further $30,200 to support another five organisations that applied for the grant.

  • Allendale East Public Hall – Hall renovation $10,000
  • St Johns Ambulance Volunteers – Burn over kits $1,500

2022 Swinging with the Stars

Over 520 people made their way out to the Barn on Saturday 19th June, as we hosted our annual major fundraiser, Swinging with the Stars.  8 local stars performed 4 dance routines under the tutelage of Kim Cella, Keana Soper and Jazmyn Boyd from Hype Dance.  The 3 judges found it very tough to decide on just one winner!

We would like to congratulate the winner for 2022, Matthew Grubb and his dance partner Jacinta Cooper.

We also announced on the night the 2022 People's Choice award, who individually raised the most amount of money, this year the award was won by Felicia Jones.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the supporters for this years event, without you all we would not be able to put on such an amazing event.
