Technology InnovationsA new method found to deliver medication to malignant brain tumors
Researchers in Sean Lawler’s lab demonstrated a new approach in mice for delivering medication using a modified peptide to cross the blood-brain barrier. PitchBook released its rankings for the top 100 colleges producing the most entrepreneurs who have founded venture capital-backed companies. Brown came in 19th with a total of 511 founders, 476 companies, and a sum total of $34.9B raised. The Engine to host the 2nd annual cohort of Whiteboard in January 2023
The Engine, a venture firm from MIT, will host the 2nd cohort of the Whiteboard program, designed to help faculty navigate the transition of their technology from academic labs into tech startups. AtomICs, which created a molecule-based data storage system, won the annual Cox Business Get Started RI competition. As winners of the “Shark Tank” style pitch event, the startup was awarded $50,000 and technical assistance from Cox Business. Patents awarded to Brown in engineering, computer science, and chemistry
Patents were recently awarded to Brown for research from the labs of Kenneth Breuer, Engineering (11,467,058); Roberto Tamassia, Computer Science (11,468,009); Shouheng Sun, Chemistry (11,472,923); and David Borton, Engineering (11,464,964). The next annual COI cycle for faculty & researchers kicks off in Feb. 2023. Additional announcements will be made next month. Faculty/researchers report in InfoEd. The COI cycle for staff also starts in Feb. 2023. Staff submit their COI forms in Workday. Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training
Students and trainees who need to complete RCR training can now register for the BEARCORE program, which will run in March-April 2023. This multi-week course fulfills NIH and NSF RCR requirements. See here for more information. Reminder—restricted universities
The U.S. Dept of Commerce makes frequent updates to its list of Restricted Entities. Certain restrictions apply when collaborating with, or hosting visitors from, listed universities. The US government imposed stricter requirements on exports (shipping or hand-carrying) to the five destinations listed above. In some cases, extra documentation is required. Do you intend to deposit human subjects data into a data repository? Use these new Consent, Parent Permission, and Assent Templates as an addendum to your consent process. NEW Data Repository Templates for awards requiring GUIDs
Specific NIH Institutes require de-identified human subjects data to be deposited in a federal repository using codes called Global Unique Identifiers (GUIDs). If your award has this requirement, use new Consent, Parent Permission, and Assent Templates.

Faculty transfers are common at the calendar year end. Please refer to our new PI Transitions pages for incoming or outgoing faculty for guidance and checklists to ensure that all OVPR-related processes are completed before arrival or departure.
