News from the College of Business, Government & Law
We acknowledge the traditional owners, both past and present, of the various locations Flinders University operates on, and recognise their continued relationship and responsibility to these lands and waters. We recognise that Flinders was established on the lands of the Kaurna nation, with the main Flinders campus located near Warriparinga.
Welcome to the November edition of the College of Business, Government and Law newsletter.
This edition includes a raft of initiatives and activities across the College, including a new feature designed to improve our access to information when we need it – ‘Make the Staff Portal your first port of call’. I have already followed its advice and bookmarked the webpage, which includes events, documents and forms, and staff awards.
This newsletter also announces the launch of a new podcast series Expect More of Law: The Podcast, and includes a report on Jessica Genauer’s celebrated podcasts War in Ukraine: Update from Kyiv. Both podcast series are not only rich in insights, but also in opportunities for grassroots marketing, which differentiate our courses from those of other universities.
As we prepare to extend our teaching delivery to Festival Plaza, this type of grassroots marketing becomes invaluable. My sincere thanks to all our staff who drive such initiatives.
Kind regards,
Michael Michael Gilding
Vice-President and Executive Dean
Welcome to the BGL community

Defence Entrepreneurship Program delivers solutions
MBA students undertaking the Defence Entrepreneurship Program are developing innovative solutions to business problems A team of MBA students at Flinders University have worked towards a solution to a problem faced by industries around the world, as they develop and build an innovative talent base within the public sector.

Dr Jessica Genauer continues coverage of Ukraine
Dr Jessica Genauer, host of War in Ukraine: Update from Kyiv, has been busy responding to media requests this month. Here's a snapshot. "Zelensky’s nightly
speeches often draw on universal themes, emphasising the relevance of Ukraine’s war to people all over the world... the aspiration to move from oppression to freedom, to choose life in the face of destruction, is one in which almost all countries and populations have a part to play," she writes in a piece for The Conversation titled: 'A struggle between normality and madness: why Volodymyr Zelensky’s speeches have captured the world’s attention.' 'Why did Russia launch a 'barrage' of missiles on Ukraine, and what could happen next?', SBS. Read More >
'What would happen if Russia used a nuclear weapon in Ukraine?', ABC. Read More >
Make the Staff Portal your first port of call
Visit the BGL page on our staff website Every staff member at Flinders should bookmark the staff website. It contains the staff directory, information about systems and services, workplace support, teaching resources and benefits - like our free news subscription offer.
The BGL page on the staff portal can be incredibly helpful: if you're ever looking to solve a problem but aren't sure who to contact, it's here that you can find organisational charts for college governance, college support, and college committees (see documents and forms), as well as our comprehensive contacts page.
Researcher Spotlight:
Melissa Ellen-Dowling
"In today’s expanding landscape of social media, the quality and immediacy of public debates has never been more intense nor more important to democracy. Yet, at the same time, the digital architecture of that landscape has never been more vulnerable to malign foreign and domestic actors with low-cost technological exploits."

An award-winning conference presentation and new book Dr Stacey Henderson recently gave presentations at two conferences: one on international law and multiple space stations in low Earth orbit at the Australian Space Research Conference held in Sydney (for which her presentation was awarded an ECR prize by the conference organisers!), as well as one for the forthcoming Oxford Handbook on Women and International Law hosted by the Max Planck Institute, Luxembourg.
The latter conference investigated the wide-ranging impacts of international law on women and vice versa. Dr Henderson co-authored a chapter on the UN's Women, Peace & Security agenda for the Handbook here.
Henderson also released a sole-authored monograph recently, which looks at the emerging practice of States choosing to respond to atrocities in non-forceful ways, inspired by the concept of the Responsibility to Protect (R2P). Henderson introduces and develops an original conceptual tool - intercession - to capture and explain this change in State practice and the impact of R2P on the development of international law.

As we move into the last quarter of the year, this is a great time for academic staff to update their research outputs in ResearchNow. An up-to-date research profile is a vital tool for promoting you and your research, and the data it provides is essential for internal reporting at both the college and university levels, including for workload.
If you need any assistance in updating your ResearchNow profile and publications list, please visit the ResearchNow support page or contact the CBGL Research Support Team.
A natural evolution of our annual Brave Minds publication, Fearless Research stories are an opportunity to immerse yourself in some of the innovative work being undertaken by Flinders University’s researchers, who are changing lives and improving the world.

Industry Projects are complete for 2022 It's been a successful year for our Industry Projects program! Over 12 weeks and 12 final presentations, students enrolled in Flinders' Industry Projects topics engaged with 14 industry clients to work on business problems: researching, learning from their client and teachers, and developing solutions that could potentially have real application.
"I appreciate the uni collaborating with real life businesses, as it adds an element of excitement and engagement you wouldn't normally get," one student told us.
How do different types of proximity affect the performance of innovation networks and precincts?
Professor Ron Boschma (Utrecht University) is the leading international authority on how different forms of proximity (cognitive, organizational, social, institutional, and spatial) affect firms in innovation ecosystems. This talk will build
on his earlier work, which analyses why some individuals and firms are better connected than others, and what types of proximity foster connectivity and effective knowledge flows.
The lecture will be followed by a discussion with Prof. John Spoehr, Director of the Australian Industrial Transformation Institute (AITI), exploring how this research might inform innovation
development locally.
