NAL team awarded two grants

NAL’s Viji Easwar, Head of Paediatric Hearing Loss, and Xiaoyin Shang, Head of Strategy and Innovation, have recently been awarded grants. Viji has been awarded the NHMRC Investigator Grant and Xiaoyin has been awarded a grant from the National Industry PhD Program.

$7.3 million in NHMRC grants for Macquarie health projects

Eight projects led by Macquarie University researchers received a total of more than $7.3 million. One of the projects, led by Professor Bamini Gopinath, Macquarie University Hearing, receives $660,737 over three years for ‘HearHealth: A co-designed online support service empowering consumers with hearing loss’.

5000 PLUMs

NAL is analysing over 5000 Parent-evaluated Listening & Understanding Measure (PLUM) results for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. This will help to determine how good the PLUM is at predicting a child’s long term ear health.

Participate in research
We need people of all ages to take part in research projects and help contribute to better diagnosis and treatment. Take a look at some of the projects we are currently working on and if you're interested please make contact.

Macquarie University are looking for native English speakers 8-12 years with and without reading disorders.

We will use EEG to record brain activity while your child listens to a
podcast and answers questions. We will also ask them to perform
simple tasks to measure attention, memory, vocabulary, and
speechrecognition. Children will be compensated
$120 for 2 sessions of 2.5 and 2 hours.

Macquarie University are inviting 2/5 year-old children with normal hearing who speak mainly English at home

We are investigating the link between what children can say and what they can understand, through fun games and activities, for an hour on two occasions, approximately two weeks apart. HALOS is looking for volunteers to participate in the survey

Who are aged 40 years +, wear a hearing device (hearing aid or cochlear implant) in at least one ear, sufficient in English to complete the survey and are able to give informed consent.
You will be reimbursed a $30 Coles-Myer gift card at the end of the study.

Understanding Hearing Aid/Cochlear Implant Performance in Realistic Environments

We are currently recruiting people aged between 40-80yrs who wear two cochlear implants (Nucelus 5, 6, 7 or 8), or a cochlear implant and a hearing aid together (bimodal). The study takes place in-person at the Australian Hearing Hub at Macquarie University over 2-3 appointments between 1.5hrs-3hrs, and participants will receive $30/hour for participating. Participation includes hearing and speech testing, measurement of hearing devices, and wearing a loaner hearing aid for a fortnight if one is worn. National Acoustic Laboratories (NAL) is running a study to examine brain responses to phonological discrimination and executive functions in adults with normal hearing

Seeking young adults with normal hearing and speaking English as their first language to participate in a study, which involves a 2-2.5 hour long lab visit at NAL. Participation will be reimbursed (AUD $20 per hour).

For children who find reading difficult

Children (aged 6-12) who experience reading difficulties are invited to help us create a robot reading buddy. These sessions will include an interview that will involve drawing us a robot and being asked questions. They will also get to meet 3 of our very own robots! You child will be asked to complete short reading assessments and the interview will be audio recorded. You will also be asked to complete a questionnaire about your child’s behaviour and wellbeing. The sessions will take about 90 minutes and your child will be given $30 for their time. For more information, please contact Hannah
