Welcome from the Acting Head of Law 🎄Welcome to the December edition of our newsletter.🎁 We hope you have had a rewarding and stimulating first term of the academic year. The Christmas break is an opportunity to take some time out, slow down, and find some peace and relaxation – wherever in the world you may be. We look forward to welcoming you back in January with new energy and determination. I look forward to seeing you then, and if I can be of any assistance to you, please do not hesitate to get in touch. Best wishes, Education Matters with David Yuratich 🎅Ho, Ho Ho! to all of you ahead of your winter break.🎄
It has been a very busy term for all of us! This term the Law School has worked hard to introduce several initiatives which are designed to provide you with support in your assessments. These should be of use over the break as you prepare. They were introduced following student feedback requesting more guidance on assessment criteria and assessment writing. Please check the Law ELE Gateway for details, particularly the following sections:
Please do take a break as well. Here are some suggestions of festive watching for all law students: The Santa Clause (one for contract law fans), Miracle on 34th Street (Santa Claus on trial! Surprise evidence!), the Muppet Christmas Carol (critically discuss Scrooge’s behaviour in relation to the Landlord and Tenant Act 1985, land lawyers!) and Klaus (because it is the best Christmas film, and I will be taking no further questions at this time). Finally, if you have ever wondered to yourself, ‘If I appeared in court dressed as Santa Claus, would that end well for me?’, fire up Westlaw and see paragraph 26 of Notting Hill Genesis v Sabouh Aziz [2024] EWCC 15. Best wishes, Client Interviewing Competition - The Final
It was great to see so many students keen to develop their legal and personal skills by entering the all-school Client Interviewing Competition. Eight finalists came through the rounds to take part in the final held at Foot Anstey in November. The winners were Andy Takhar and Arielle De Leon. If you fancy taking part in the competition next time, read about their experiences on the webpage below. Malaysia Visit
This November, Dr Ben Hudson was in Malaysia to meet with potential future Exeter Law School students and valued partners, including Brickfields Asia College (BAC). At BAC, he attended the Education Fair with Professor Greta Bosch, along with Malaysia-based colleagues Cal Choong and PohWan Cheang. Ben has visited Kuala Lumpur several times, but on this trip he had the opportunity to travel to east Malaysia. In Kota Kinabalu and Kuching, he led research-informed teaching sessions on 'Climate Change and the Courts' and 'Who Owns My DNA?'. Ben says, "I love visiting Malaysia. It was a great experience to travel not only to KL but also KK and Kuching. As always, I received a really warm welcome from everyone I met. I was honestly blown away by the enthusiasm, quality and promise of the students with whom I had the pleasure of teaching and speaking. I really hope many of them will choose to study with us at Exeter Law School (and therefore join the excellent students who are already studying here with us 😊)" This trip, Ben had his first delicious Milo Dinosaur and some excellent vegetarian food. For any students craving Milo - you are very welcome to visit him in his office to collect a free sachet! He also has some other Malaysian snacks to share if anyone is missing some home treats.
This term we also held a social gathering for current Malaysian students in the Court Room. We were joined by our excellent former student Shriya Shan who works in Cornwall as a Young People’s Project Worker with the RJ Project. As well as really interesting conversation there was a chance to savour flavours from home with some Malaysian treats and snacks. Book publishing deal for LLB studentSecond year LLB student Lucy Halley's writing took off during the quiet of lockdown. Her continued passion for writing has now led to a publishing deal for her debut novel, Hyacinthus. Together her love of antiquity and study of Classical Civilisations has provided her with a deep understanding she can bring to her characters and story settings. Recently Lucy took time out of her studies to share more about her novel and how she balances her law studies with her writing.
