Research Spotlight

In their study "Using the Disclosure Decision-Making Model to Examine Patient Confusion Disclosure," Brianna Romeo M.S. '23 and Dr. Jennifer Bevan examined the processes that patients use to disclose that they are confused about some aspect of a medical appointment to their healthcare provider. They examined 251 U.S. adults who indicated that they felt confusion during a recent appointment with their healthcare provider. Results found that when there was less stigma related to disclosing the confusion and participants were more confident that they could effectively communicate their confusion, they were more likely to disclose. However, the response anticipated by the healthcare provider and the relationship between the patient and provider were not related to confusion disclosure. These findings provide partial support for the Disclosure Decision-Making Model.

Brianna initiated and conceptualized this research project as it served as a pre-test for her final graduate capstone project to complete her M.S. in Health and Strategic Communication. It was also presented at the National Communication Association meeting in National Harbor.

Internship Spotlight - Kaleo Chang '20

Applying to jobs after graduation can be daunting when many require experience in a related field. While we encourage you to use your class projects and campaigns to showcase your experience and skills, internships create opportunities to get work experience and build a professional network that may help you after graduation. In some cases, an internship ultimately leads to an official role with the company.

Kaleo Chang '20 worked as an intern for the Office of the Hawaii State Senate President, connecting with other legislators and staff to address local and national issues and attending meetings with government and business leaders. After completing a four-month internship, Kaleo was hired as a legislative aid, where they continued some of the responsibilities from their internship and took on new duties like drafting letters, memos, and certificates, to name a few. Since then, Kaleo has continued a successful career.
