Newsletter 9 - June 5, 2026

From the Principal

Dear parents and carers,

Next week, following Tuesday evening’s School Board meeting, I will send a separate news bulletin to families with a principal’s update on a number of important matters across the school.

These will include updates regarding my recent meetings with the Department of Education, the Department of Housing and Works, the BYOD (Bring Your own Device) program, the Music Specialist program, and the Student Wellbeing Officer program.

Clear and timely communication with our community is very important to me. In line with the Department of Education’s strategic direction around strong partnerships with school communities, I want to keep families as informed as possible while also ensuring that our School Board is briefed first, where appropriate.

As many of these matters sit within a constantly changing landscape, I will continue to share the information I am able to share, as clearly and regularly as possible.

Kind regards,
Heather McNeil

SJG Food Drive 2026

The annual Social Justice Group (SJG) led Food Drive will be running throughout Week 8 (Monday 8 - Friday 12 June)! Trestle tables will be set up in both the Lower and Upper Hall for collections throughout the week.

In addition, on Friday 12 June, there will be a Casual Dress day. Students must bring in a Food Drive item to participate, otherwise they need to dress in normal school uniform. Students must remember to wear weather-appropriate clothes. For health and safety reasons, footwear must comply with the school’s uniform policy.

Western Australians are going without every day, and Foodbank WA is working hard to change that. In the last financial year, they provided almost 9.3 million meals to Western Australians through their charity partners and schools.

Foodbank relies on donations of all sizes to support people in need. We welcome all non-perishable pantry items, personal hygiene and household items. Donated items must be unopened, in their original packaging with full ingredient and allergen listing, and within their best before date.

Some of the most in demand items include:

  • Good quality tinned food and meals (with ring pulls)
  • Noodles, pasta, and rice
  • Long life milk
  • Cereal, Muesli bars and snacks
  • Tea and coffee
  • Personal hygiene products
  • Baby food and formula
  • Spreads e.g. jam, peanut butter, Vegemite

If you would like more information about Foodbank WA, please head to: www.foodbank.org.au/wa/

Thank you for helping to make a difference in our community!

National Simultaneous Storytime

On Wednesday 27 May, the Year 1, 2 and 3 students gathered in the Lower Hall to take part in National Simultaneous Storytime.

Together, we enjoyed the beautiful story of Luna Roo, the Kangaroo Baller and followed Luna Roo’s journey as she worked towards becoming the greatest player she could be.

Afterwards, students were excited to watch a live drawing demonstration of Luna Roo.

A big thank you to Mrs Foti for organising this wonderful event for our students!

Year 5 Students Explore Rupert Street Pocket Park

On Tuesday of Week 7, the Year 5 students were invited by the City of Subiaco to visit the newly opened Rupert Street Pocket Park, located just a short two-minute walk from the school on the site of the former Subiaco Community Centre.

The park was recently completed following extensive community consultation, where local residents shared their ideas for how the space could best be used. The overwhelming response was a desire for a green, sustainable space featuring native, bird-attracting plants and a peaceful place for people to enjoy nature within the busy urban environment.

During the visit, students heard from landscape architect Julian Croudace, who designed the park, and Adam Cousins from the City of Subiaco. They explained the planning, design and environmental considerations involved in creating a community space such as this. Students were fascinated to learn about the many factors that must be considered when designing a park, from sustainability and biodiversity to accessibility and community needs.

One of the park’s most interesting features is a specially designed “Cockitrough” - a drinking station for native birds such as cockatoos. Once the surrounding trees have matured, it will sit high among the branches, providing a safe water source away from predators and other ground-level dangers.

The excursion was a fantastic addition to the Year 5 students Geography program, helping students deepen their understanding of how people shape environments to meet the needs of communities while also protecting and enhancing the natural environment.

If you are passing by the Rupert Street Pocket Park, be sure to stop and take a look. Keep an eye out in the coming months as the beautiful ceramic tiles created by the students in L9 are installed as part of the park’s ongoing development.

P&C News

P&C Update Regarding Council Precinct Development Plan
P&C representatives have been present at March and April City of Subiaco Open Council Meetings to present statements and ask questions regarding the impact of the Council’s proposed redevelopment of the it’s building and gardens on Rokeby Road. The Mayor and Councillors have taken notice of our concerns. The Council have voted to proceed with planning a new council building but have gone back to the drawing board regarding options, including refurbishment of the existing building and considering an alternative location. The P&C have requested a meeting with councillors to discuss our school community’s concerns further, which has been positively received, and a date is being organised.

P&C Update Regarding Local Population Growth Impact on Subiaco Primary
With the population of the school’s intake area set to increase rapidly in the coming decade, we are advocating for careful and holistic school development planning to State government. We have met with our local member of the SLA, Jonathan Huston, who has requested and been denied a technical briefing regarding this matter. We will post updates on further developments.

Get involved with the P&C in 2026!
We are always looking for fresh faces to be part of our events team so if you’re new to the school it is the perfect opportunity to get involved in the school community with a great group of parents. Subiaco Primary has a wonderful community — we’d love you to be part of it.

Subi Farmers Market

Saturday 6 June 2026

There’s something very satisfying about fresh potatoes that have just come straight from the ground. Roast them, boil them, turn them into mash… simple food is sometimes the best kind of food, especially when it’s fresh.

And while you’re here, grab a few things to get some fresh salad on your plate this week. Crisp greens, tomatoes, cucumber and herbs can make even a quick lunch feel a bit better. See you at the market Saturday morning.
