June 2023 Newsletter

Dear Women's Auxiliary Board,

I hope this letter finds you well! The month of May was a joy for me as I was able to see many of you at our Membership Tea. Moreover, we had the privilege of commemorating countless DBU graduates, all of whom have been recipients of your unwavering support through prayer, service, and generous giving. Your support has provided opportunities for students to pursue their dreams, experience personal growth, and build a strong foundation for their future.

As we move forward into the summer months, I am excited to share some upcoming events that we have planned. Keep scrolling and save the dates!

Membership is Now Open!

Even if you could not be with us for the Membership Tea, we would love for you to join or renew your Women's Auxiliary Board Membership for the 2023-2024 year!  Your membership dues cover membership from May 2023 - May 2024, and include invitations, emails, and newsletters that encourage you to participate and contribute to DBU as well as to attend all luncheon events hosted by the auxiliary.

If you would like to volunteer for a committee after reading these descriptions, please email me at leslie@dbu.edu.

New Student Reception (August 16 and 17): This reception is held at the President’s home each August.  The committee assists the President and Mrs. Wright as they receive and meet new students entering the new academic year.  You will receive an email in July to determine if you are still available to serve, then another email in August giving instructions on parking and arrival time. At the reception, ladies on this committee serve as hostesses welcoming new students to DBU, serving refreshments, conversing with students, and cleaning up as the students leave. (Time commitment: one afternoon in August)

Yellow Ribbon Luncheon (September 6): The Yellow Ribbon Luncheon is held at the beginning of the fall semester each year and serves as a kickoff of the new academic year.  Yellow ribbons adorn the campus welcoming students' “home” to University Hill.  Ladies on this committee meet to determine a theme, menu, and decorations. They are all highly encouraged to purchase a table and fill it with friends that would support DBU or want to know more about DBU’s Christian mission. (Time commitment: one committee meeting in June or July, one afternoon decorating the day before the luncheon in September, luncheon day)

FLOW International Luncheon (Free Lunch On Wednesdays) (September 27, 2023): Ladies on this committee financially sponsor and serve international cuisine to DBU students attending a Baptist Student Ministries luncheon. The luncheon is free to the students. (Time commitment: one lunch (1 ½ hours) in the fall, and one lunch (1 ½ hours) in the spring)

Ruth Awards Luncheon (December 6, 2023): The Ruth Awards Luncheon is held each December and honors 2-3 ladies who have showed the loyalty and commitment to Christian ideals and DBU, similar to the characteristics of Ruth in the Bible.  Ladies on this committee meet to determine a menu and help bring others to learn more about DBU. Committee members are highly encouraged to purchase a table and fill it with friends that would support DBU or want to know more about DBU’s Christian mission. They also assist the award winners before and after the luncheon. (Time commitment: one committee meeting in September, one afternoon setting up for the luncheon the day prior to the luncheon, luncheon day)

Bluebonnet Luncheon (April 3, 2024): The Bluebonnet Luncheon is held each spring and highlights events and activities that have occurred during the academic year and celebrates international students who are graduating in May. Ladies on this committee meet to determine a theme, menu, decorations, and gifts for the international graduates. They are all highly encouraged to purchase a table and fill it with friends that would support DBU or want to know more about DBU’s Christian mission. (Time commitment: one committee meeting in February, one afternoon setting up for the luncheon the day prior to the luncheon, luncheon day)

Honors Day Reception Committee (May 1, 2024): Ladies on this committee serve as hostesses at a reception after the Honors Day Chapel. They bake cookies and serve cookies and punch at the reception. (Time commitment: preparation of cookies, one hour on the day of the reception)

Ministry to Missionary Children – Committee chair determines times and ministries to the 20-25 missionary children who attend DBU this academic year.  In the past the committee has provided treats, school supplies, snacks, gift cards, notes of encouragement, and lunch for the students throughout the year, usually during the beginning of each semester, holidays, and during final exams. (Time commitment: 2-3 hours, 3 times each academic year depending on activities planned by chair)

This year we want each of you to consider how you can pray, serve, and give supporting DBU through the Women's Auxiliary Board.  Here are some practical ways to become involved this summer:

DBU All-University Prayer Requests

DBU Athletics' Summer Camps - This summer, DBU Athletics will host youth camps and clinics on the DBU main campus for kids and teens, led by our coaching staff. Please pray that young athletes will not only gain new skills but also be receptive as our coaches share the gospel in each camp. If you know a young athlete interested in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, hockey, Patriettes dance team, men’s or women’s soccer, stunt and cheer, tennis, or volleyball, please direct them to www.dbupatriots.com.

Jewel House and Stone House - Jewel House is a Living Learning Community that provides discipleship through mentoring to 36 female freshmen residents. Stone House does the same for their 36 male residents. Please be praying the Lord would prepare the hearts of the incoming residents to fully embrace this program that will impact their entire college career and life after college. Pray that the Lord would provide wisdom for the upperclassmen mentors who will be guiding the residents through their freshman year. Join with us in praising God for this profound opportunity for these students.

Physical Operations - Please pray for the diligent Physical Operations team throughout the sweltering summer months. They put so much energy into keeping our campus looking beautiful and running smoothly. Please pray that God will strengthen, refresh, and protect them as they carry out their duties, often for hours in the Texas sun. Praise God for this team who keeps our beautiful buildings in top shape.

DBU Women's Auxiliary Board Member Prayer Requests

For the 2023-2024 year, the DBU Women's Auxiliary Board Staff, Chaplain Patty Lovvorn, and our Executive Committee are committing to pray for the needs of our members and their loved ones. Please let us know how we can pray for you by following this link: Prayer Request Form

Scholarships are always a great way to support DBU.  Students are transformed personally by receiving a Christ-centered higher education at DBU but need help financially. To contribute, go to www.dbu.edu/give.  Choose "Student Scholarships."  You may also send a check in the mail to Dallas Baptist University, 3000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, Texas 75211.

Volunteer to bring housewares, new or used, to help furnish apartments for our international students for the fall semester.  Students moving from other countries need basic housewares to cook, sleep, and live in their new DBU apartments.  Suggested items include dishes, cookware, silverware, glasses, sheets, towels, utensils. Email leslie@dbu.edu to arrange to drop off items this summer.

2023-2024 Women's Auxiliary Board Executive Committee

2023-2024 Women's Auxiliary Board President
Jacque Delkus

Jacque grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, where she had the unique upbringing of her parents’ Southern roots and Christian heritage combined with the practicality and work ethic of the Midwest.  After college, she began her career in computer science with McDonnell Douglas/Boeing Corporation.  Several years later, she met her love and future husband, Pete.  Marrying Pete meant moving around the country which she did while working as Executive Director of ExecuTrain, Microsoft’s computer software training division.

Following several years of newlywed adventures, Jacque started her new career as a mother.  Beginning with Emily Pearl, who is now 26 yrs. (DBU graduate) and ending with Peter Joseph, 23 yrs. (UTD graduate).  This also began her volunteer journey where she served in her church’s Woman’s ministry, became a traveling speaker and board member of MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers), and held various roles within the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky chapter of Junior League.

Once again, the Delkus family relocated - thankfully to the great state of Texas, where soon Jacque made it clear that Dallas was “home”!  As the kids grew, Jacque became increasingly involved in their education and activities.  She soon discovered that being a PTA officer and Team mom not only gave her the opportunity to give back to her community, but also allowed her to observe and learn firsthand what was happening in the lives of her children.  She even got to be around her kids during those interesting high school years, serving as President of Jesuit’s Woman’s Auxiliary, President of National Charity League, and Choir and Theater booster club President.  But her greatest joy came from directing the Children’s Choir and annual VBS musical at Parkway Hills Baptist Church.  Every Wednesday night, she looked forward to teaching and loving on her students.

Now entering the next season of life, Jacque has returned to her computer beginnings.  She currently instructs single pregnant/moms in software skills and also owns and operates a non-profit that provides website design for Christian-based organizations.

Jacque and Pete have a deep love for DBU and the transformation the university has made in the lives of their daughter and countless other students. Jacque is truly honored to serve in the Women’s Auxiliary Board (WAB) and the multiple programs it provides to support the academic, financial and spiritual needs of our students.
