Since opening in December last year, the newly developed waterfront area of Naval Point - Te Nukutai o Tapoa has been well-used by our community. Work continues to progress on our long-term vision for the area, as set out in the Naval Point Development Plan. Stage two works update From early April, work will begin on an upgrade and extension to the watermain and carpark area. In partnership with Ngāti Wheke, Council staff are working on developing a waterfront walkway next to the upgraded carpark, with seating and planters. These elements will be designed so that they can be removed to free up space when SailGP yachting events are being held. The Council are exploring other enhancements to further encourage people to interact with the waterfront area. SailGP Announcement SailGP have recently announced that Whakaraupō-Lyttleton Harbour will host two SailGP yachting events over the next four years. The announcement made on Thursday 17 March confirmed that the first of those events will take place from 18 to 19 March 2023. The Council will continue with redevelopment work in the lead up to the event, which will see international teams from Bermuda, the US, Great Britain, Denmark, France, Spain and the United Arab Emirates join New Zealand to race on the harbour. Breakwater We are continuing to work on the design of a new public ramp and breakwater, taking into consideration feedback from the community when the development plan went out for consultation and our ongoing discussions with Naval Point users. The refined plan for these marine and safety upgrades will go out for public consultation once drafted. Leasing of land The Council is eager to hear from any not-for-profit sports, recreational and community organisations interested in using land at Naval Point - Te Nukutai o Tapoa for water based recreational activities. Groups have until 30 March 2022 to make an expression of interest to occupy part of the land at Naval Point - Te Nukutai o Tapoa, Lyttelton.
