AI Bootcamp: Foundational Models - November 11-15

This one week course will help graduate students and researchers gain an understanding of foundational models, including: large language models (LLMs), generative models, retrieval augmented generation (RAGs), and reasoning using machine learning. Visit the AI Bootcamp website to learn more about prerequisites, the pre-screening Python programming quiz, and registration. The deadline for submitting the pre-screening quiz is Monday, November 7th. For any questions on the AI Bootcamp, contact Reza Sadri, the AI Bootcamp Director.

Spotlight On Our People

Miles Johnson

Miles Ross Johnson

Graduate Student, Applied Physics and Materials Science

My name is Miles Ross Johnson, and I am entering my fourth year as a PhD student in the Applied Physics department. My research interests are centered around investigating the fundamental optical and electrical properties of novel materials, with a focus on applications in sustainability. I use both computational and experimental techniques, attempting to predict phenomena from first-principles quantum mechanics (i.e. Density Functional Theory and more advanced techniques), and then fabricating devices centered around the novel material to test my prediction. For the past year or so I’ve been focused on NiPS3, a material which is interesting for a variety of reasons, but most prominently for its unique optical properties which are tied to its magnetic structure. Outside of my research, I spend a lot of time rock climbing, and I also play the Tenor Saxophone in the Caltech Jazz Band and the Caltech Wind Ensemble.

Arden Shao

Arden Shao

Undergraduate Student, Computing and Mathematical Sciences

Hello! I am a third-year undergraduate student majoring in computer science with an interest in problems at the intersection of astronomy and computer science. In past summers, I have traveled to Copenhagen to work on probing for ultra-high-redshift galaxies (the galaxies from the earliest days of the universe) and Sydney, utilizing a new method of detection aiming to find circumbinary planets, or planets that revolve around a stellar binary, by observing their dynamical effects on stellar orbits. I am curious about questions that can have a profound impact on our understanding of our place in the world and our humanity, which is why I have also been involved in youth workshops about civic engagement and intersectionality and enjoy exploring writing as a peer tutor at the Hixon Writing Center. I am thankful for all the mentorship I have received at Caltech and think it is one of the greatest gifts as a student here. In my free time, I enjoy traveling, sightseeing, skating, and hanging out with cats.

We'd like to feature you!
